Your Personal Image Is Everything PART 2/3: Appearance

This 3-part image consulting blog series inspects your personal image from 3 different angles: Your communication, your appearance and your digital presence. In the second part we look at your appearance as the most visible part of your personal image.

Fashion designer, stylist and editor-in-chief Rachel Zoe said: “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” This resonated strongly with me as it captures perfectly the essence of the importance of your personal image. People sum you up in seconds and sometimes they already have an opinion about you before you have even uttered a word. It doesn’t sound very fair, does it, but it’s important to remember that you have full control of your image. I am not saying that you have to look like someone else, actually on the contrary, looking like yourself is always the best idea. Just look like the best possible version of yourself -and you’d be surprised how little it actually takes.

Style is a way to say who you are

Consider the following elements of your appearance

  • Clothes. Clean, neat and pressed should be your key words here. Add items with more flair only when your basics are sorted. Learn to make small repairs yourself or get to know a good tailor in your area. Many high-street pieces will look better on you with small alterations.
  • Hair. Get a haircut that flatters your features. A good hair stylist can take years off your look and make you look more contemporary in a flash. Balding can be done gracefully and it can actually increase your image of leadership.
  • Makeup (if applicable). Use makeup to enhance your look but don’t go overboard. Get professional advice at beauty counters or follow vlogs and blogs online. What works for your favorite celebrity may not work for you. Save wild brush strokes for a night out.
  • Perfume/Cologne (if applicable). Your scent should not arrive before you so use sparingly. Some offices have a no-scent policy that should be respected.
  • Nails. You don’t need an expensive manicure to have good nails. Keep your nails shaped and clean. Short is always is fashion and a simple buffer and a hand cream can do miracles.
  • Jewelry & watch (if applicable). These are the statement pieces that say the most about you. If you are going to invest, go for understated, classic and sophisticated pieces.
  • Shoes. Keep them clean at all times. Keep a shoe sponge handy and polish your shoes regularly. Opt for styles that you feel comfortable in and that match your life style and job description.
  • Bag (if applicable). This is another status item along your watch and your jewelry. Good quality leather is worth investing in. Polish regularly and keep it’s contents neat.
  • Accessories (if applicable). You can compliment your look with these seemingly insignificant items that still tell loads about you. Choose classic items or go for conversation starters.
  • Personal hygiene. I can’t stress enough the importance of this! There is simply no excuse to neglect your personal hygiene in any possible situation.

Look The Part

What’s in it for you?

We would like to think that appearances don’t matter, but they really do. People will expect you to look the part and the higher you claim the higher the expectations. Putting your best foot forward is not about being vain. It’s about investing in self-improvement -and allowing yourself to deserve it! Getting an image revamp can help you in many ways:

  • Huge boost to your confidence
  • Clearer self-image
  • Learn to appreciate your worth
  • Increase your executive presence for better job opportunities
  • Send the right message with your style

Your Style is Your Visual Resume

Your style is your visual resume. Never underestimate the power of your personal image and start investing in it now. It doesn’t necessarily mean expensive as we well know that money doesn’t always bring you style nor authenticity. Start with the items you already own and plan your purchases carefully.

How to get started?

  • Create a personal style that reflects your personal brand. Search inspiration from magazines, start an Instagram collection or make your own Pinterest style board.
  • The real you needs to shine through in all it’s aspects. Imitations last only for so long so better be authentic. It will also help you enjoy your style more and to feel more confident.
  • Take in consideration your unique body shape and the colours that suit you the best.
  • Go through every single item in your wardrobe. Do you see certain styles and colours appear one after another?
  • Ask for a second opinion. Invite a friend who has good style to go shopping with you or come and help you go through your wardrobe.
  • Buy only items that will complement the items that you already have. The size of your wardrobe doesn’t guarantee it’s functionality.
  • Utilize free personal shopping services at department stores, malls and shops. Bear in mind though that their job is still to sell you items from their store. With I on Image you can shop all brands from Primark to Prada.
  • Forget about the trends and concentrate on building a life-long style that tells your story.

Your appearance is the part of you that you can’t possibly hide. Do you look the part? Here at I on Image I help you discover the power of your personal style that flatters your best features. Gain more confidence and want to be the best dressed person in the room. Book your appointment already today here.

Your Personal Image Is Everything PART 1/3: Communication

This 3-part image consulting blog series inspects your personal image from 3 different angles: Your communication, your appearance and your digital presence. In the first part we look at the importance of your communication skills that are a vital part of your personal image.

Good communication skills will get you further in life: They help you deliver your message and to sell your ideas. With clear communication you will always have a better chance of getting people on your side and to make those achievements that you have dreamed of.  Improving your communication skills will enable you to work more efficiently and to avoid unnecessary conflicts. This all will, as a side product, free you more time to do things that matter to you the most.

You are the message

Communications skills are often the thing that makes it or breaks it. It’s almost impossible to remove yourself from the very center of your communication so it’s safe to say that you are the message. Your verbal and non-verbal communication need to support each other and to be fully aligned with your personal brand. This way you are actively participating in removing obstacles away from your listeners and give them a better chance to understand you.

The core of your communication is your message that you deliver to the relevant audience who then receives the message and interprets it in their own unique way. The path to mutual understanding is often riddled with interruptions and risks of misinterpretations. You can only call communication successful once you have confirmed that the audience has indeed understood your message exactly the same way as you had intended.

You are the message

Where to begin?

It is true that some people are natural born communicators but the rest can be assured that these skills can be learned and even mastered with the right motivation and effort. There are numerous courses (live and online) available regarding this topic and here at I on Image I am also very keen to help you improve your communication skills. Here I have listed some useful ways to start your journey to become a better communicator:

  • Become a better listener
  • Show genuine interest in others. You will be surprised how much you will learn!
  • Observe non-verbal cues in others and yourself
  • Get to know yourself
  • Learn to know how people are perceiving you

how do you come across?

If you are the message then it’s paramount that you gain understanding on how people are perceiving you. Your choice of words is very important here but your words only get a meaning when they are put in the right context and said in the right way, using the right tone of voice and a body-language that supports the message and your personal brand. It’s important to learn to be aware of the aspects of your non-verbal communication that are:

  • Your facial expressions, especially eye-contact
  • Your posture
  • Your gestures
  • Your way of speaking
  • Your sense of humor
  • Your appearance
  • The intensity of your presence

With an image consultant you can approach these topics in a confidential, non-judgemental and encouraging environment. My approach is always gentle and has a strong emphasis on your strengths. I challenge you and give you a push to the right direction but I want to leave the real discoveries for yourself to unravel. After all, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of this learning process.

What’s in it for you?

Some clients come to see me after hearing the same words from many different sources and decide that now it’s their time. Despite some critics of yours being tough, especially yourself, it’s good to remember that you have full control of your own image and that you can make these changes happen for yourself. To help you make the shift in your life it’s good to think about the benefits you will gain when learning to be a better communicator. Here I have listed a few advantages of gaining good communication skills but your list may well look different that mine:

  • Gain trust of people
  • Make a meaningful connection with people
  • Gain the engagement of people

Communication skills are some of the most important skills that you need to succeed in life. Here at I on Image I help you gain a better understanding of your verbal and non-verbal communication. Learn to say what you want to say, in a way that nothing about you distracts your audience from receiving your valuable message. Book your appointment already today here.

I am looking forward to help you improve your image!

Why Your Image Matters?

Your personal image is the perception that people have about you. It affects your success in every aspect of your life. When a person meets you for the first time their brain makes several snap decisions about you in just 7 seconds. Learn to make the most of them and take your personal brand on a next level that exudes confidence and professionalism.

First Impression

People are programmed to make a quick opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your gravitas and your style. No matter how much is then later learn about the person we tend to trust our first impressions above all. According to Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy these rapid decisions that people make within seconds from seeing you for the first time come down to two boiling questions:

1. Can I trust this person?

and

2. Can I respect this person?

She continues: “If someone you’re trying to influence doesn’t trust you, you’re not going to get very far; in fact, you might even elicit suspicion because you come across as manipulative. A warm, trustworthy person who is also strong elicits admiration, but only after you’ve established trust does your strength become a gift rather than a threat.”

Image is about trust and respect

Make sure people are judging you accurately and not being confused or distracted about your image. This includes, but is not limited to, simplifying things. Have less but be more powerful. People want and should see the real you but it doesn’t have to mean spilling all your secrets out there. You can control what you are giving away and what you are keeping to yourself. Center for Talent and Innovation (CTI) declared in their report about personal image: “How you look, how you speak, and how you act turn out to be critical to your success, our report concludes, at every step in your career journey.” So be mindful about your personal image. It may be all you really have.

Are people judging you accurately

Your personal image is one of the few aspects of your life that you have a full control of and I am delighted to help you to invest in yourself. FAQ at I on Image

You have questions, I have answers. Welcome to FAQ at I on Image!

1.Who is your typical client?

My typical client appreciates that your image is a powerful form of self-expression and has great impact on how you feel about yourself. They lead busy and versatile lives and want to dedicate time for their friends, families and personal development. They value self-care and are eager to invest in services that make their lives easier.

2. How do the online sessions work?

On popular demand I on Image offers now also online sessions via Skype, WhatsApp or regular call for a lower hourly rate. This option is ideal for those who prefer to have the consulting from the comfort of their own home or office. Online personal shopping has become increasingly popular due to the conveniency of the webshops being open 24/7. Please note that the items and the delivery cost need to be either pre-paid on I on Image’s account of paid by yourself upon checkout. I can arrange fitting sessions at your location and returns on your behalf but those will be charged at regular hourly rate as they involve travel, parking etc.

You can learn more about what is happening during each of I on Image’s services here.
IMAGE CONSULTING
3. Is there a minimum number of hours per appointment?

Yes. I on Image has a 2 hour booking minimum. The optimal duration of one appointment is somewhere between 2-4h. Anything more on one go starts to get quite intense and of course I don’t want to  exhaust you. We can always book a second session on another day. Rome was not built in a day and the same applies to your image. Your booked services will be invoiced after the session and they are calculated in half hour increments. If your session lasts only 1.5h you will still be invoiced for 2h. You can also pay by iZettle if you mention it in advance, make a prepayment on I on Image’s account or pay by cash. A copy of an invoice will always be provided for your records.

4. Do you make BEFORE and AFTER pictures?

Only if you want me to. Most of my clients are uncomfortable having their pictures on the internet, especially the before pictures, and I hated the idea of trying to convince them to do it. Many of my clients prefer anonymity and confidentiality and I want to fully respect that wish. Also everyone has their own unique style that reflects their one-of-a-kind personality. As a professional I understand how to make you shine and look like the best version of you without the need to copy something that is not speaking volumes on you.

PERSONAL SHOPPING

5. Is there a minimum budget for your clients?

No. I work with all budgets and all brands from Primark to Prada. It’s still wise to plan a bit ahead and give the topic some thought to avoid overspending and buyer’s remorse.

6. How do you determine which shops to take a client?

Having worked in fashion retail myself I am quite picky about where I take my clients. I always want to offer an inspiring and pleasant experience for you and to be able to do that I weigh the following aspects:

  • Your wishes: This is where it all starts!
  • Location: I consider distances between shops so that your time is not unnecessarily wasted on travel
  • Shop staff: This is self-explanatory. They just need to be good.
  • Shop selection: I follow my favorite shops actively so I know when it’s the best time to visit them.
  • Shop’s overall experience: I love shops that look nice and display their items well. Clean fitting rooms are a must and big plus if they serve drinks, offer tailoring services and home delivery.

PERSONAL SHOPPING

7. What if I hate shopping?

Majority of my clients find shopping a daunting task and some will exclusively shop online with me for this very reason. Some of my clients have told me that after shopping with me they actually enjoyed shopping because they enjoyed the end results so much. However some will always hate shopping and I fully accept it as long as you agree to try the things on.

8. But what if I love shopping?

I just love shopping with clients who enjoy it as much as I do! Some of my clients who love shopping don’t always know how to pick the best pieces for themselves so hiring me enhances their shopping experience and overall look. Some of my clients just love to have someone shop with them and sometimes they are shopping for an event or a job so important that having a professional with them makes them feel more secure and satisfied about their choices.

3 Reasons to Hire Me

It’s time to claim the ownership of your image but what really is the added value of hiring an image consultant? Here I have listed 3 very good reasons to hire me.

Photo credits: Blake Bronstad on Stocksnap.io

1. set yourself apart

Style is a powerful form of self-expression. When there is so much information and materia available it’s easy to loose insight. Sometimes you don’t even know where to begin and that’s when I come to your rescue. I map with your the areas you need the most help with and can give you unbiased advice on your personal image. My job is to make you shine and to make your life easier. I enjoy the most to see the glow of confidence and excitement on my client’s face when they try on an outfit or an item of clothing that speaks volumes on them. It belongs to their story and they know it. Others certainly will notice it!

2. Save Money

I will help you to get rid of the things things in your wardrobe that you no longer need and I will help you rediscover items that you had forgotten about or always found difficult to combine. I know which items are missing from your wardrobe and which items would complete your look. With me you will always shop with an intention. You will never return home from your shopping trip with the 5th black cardigan or a fashionable item that looks dated in a month’s time ever again. I am not a sales person and so I don’t take any kickbacks from shops from your purchases. If I am participating an affiliate program through my website it’s always clearly marked so you can make an educated choice. I shop with all budgets and all brands from Primark to Prada. As a bonus I also know when the sales start and sometimes I can even predict which items will end up in sales so you can snatch them for half the price when the time is right.

3. Save Time

I have made a career of knowing where the best items are hiding. I always find the hidden gems in the fashion jungle. I know which shops have the nicest staff and tidiest fitting rooms. I know when they get new stock and whether they have the possibility to order more of sold out items. I also know the web shops inside out and can search for items online if they are sold out in store. I plan our shopping trip so that we spend minimum time from moving from shop to another. I always keep in mind your budget, your body shape, your colours and your lifestyle. I advice how to wear your outfits and how to take care of them so you can cherish them for years.

Chasing perfect

Us humans have a natural tendency to aim for perfection. We admire it’s sublime beauty in architecture, literature, music and very much in science like mathematics. But when it comes to natural sciences like biology of psychology, suddenly the exceptions becomes more interesting than perfection.

There is no charisma in the absoluteness of black and white but in lies in the various shades of the rainbow somewhere in between.

Chasing perfection in your appearance is a futile attempt because once you have reached it, you have already lost the game. There is nothing tangible in perfection and we can’t relate to it. We put it on a pedestal -and just look at it. It becomes an object of admiration. But there is no development and thus no future. Time freezes in perfection, and while it’s an amazing experience to look into Mona Lisa’s 500 year old eyes, for enjoyable life and a successful career there needs to be a journey with a past, present and future.

Perfection is possible in brief passing moments but the beauty of life comes in it’s imperfections and the hiccups on the road. There is no charisma in the absoluteness of black and white but in lies in the various shades of the rainbow somewhere in between. Same applies to you. You are the unique YOU and that is what makes you magnetic. Everyone has their own story and the ability to tell that story through their image. My job is to give it a visual form.

I must admit that I actually dislike the current positive body movement because it draws the attention to the female body sacrificing their wonderful skills and radiating charisma. The body itself is nothing but a shell. Your story is the one that lives long after you. When you allow yourself to admit your dreams, you are taking a major leap towards the person you want to be and who you want to look like. Rachel Zoe said: “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Style is indeed a great way to express yourself, but without a connection to the real you, it remains vague. So keep on looking for that connection. Just like you, your style should evolve and move on. It should never be 100% ready. It is not meant to be perfect.

Perfection is just… boring. You are… everything.

Field notes about ageism

Ageism means stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. Recent studies in the US and in UK show that women are facing persistent age discrimination as they get older.

I am turning 40 this year, along a wonderful line of spectacular women who I am proud to call my friends, and it feels impossible to imagine that our beautiful mischievous gang is approaching a point in life where we are no longer considered valuable, desirable or worth investing in. Ageism is a real problem for women in the workplace but I am pleased to see a wind of change blowing the dust away and giving space to a more diverse and more skilled than ever workforce. Empowering women over (and below!) a certain age, mothers, ethnic minorities is an absolute must in order to prep your business for the approaching new decade. Women have never been more capable than they are today and reducing them to a product with an expiry date is just an utter waste of fabulous resources.

My clients often ask for a fresher, younger and more dynamic look. They have come to the right address because I love to create strong signature looks that work for my client, instead of my client working for the look. You can read more about my approach in my blog I on Image at work -Creating ageless and timeless looks. I am myself unapologetic about my age, and I want to inject that confidence in my clients instead of Botox.

I always advice to be open and honest about your age, just as you would be honest about your skills. Think about you the courses you have taken, seminars and conferences you have attended, things that interest you so much that you find yourself wanting to read more and more about the topic. These are all great assets to have and you may have not have had them when you were 20. Certainly you didn’t know then all that you know today. Every year you are more wiser and more experienced. You just need to stay curious and keep that spark in your eye going on. As a result of your experience and learning you are an improved version of yourself today. This is the image you want to show to the outer world regardless of your age.

Thinking about your digital presence, we have been blessed with a myriad of tools that put us right on the edge of the latest technology without actually being incredibly tech savvy. Use that in your advantage and take the best of all features that your relevant social media platforms offer. Have a professional business head shot taken and add a couple of items in your wardrobe that are a logical part of your narrative.

Regarding your personal style, allow yourself to live a little of your dreams. If you love a certain style or item, go for it. Life is too short to think if you can pull it off. If it makes you heart skip a beat, it’s probably the right item for you. I give advice regarding the most common body shapes and very often I notice that women already know what suits them. They just unsure on how to incorporate it in their every day life. Many also ask if they can wear certain items past a certain age. Earlier this year a list of “20 things no woman should wear after 30“compiled by Twitter user Molly Manglewood went viral. Don’t let the title fool you, it is a hilarious list (I agree that wearing a “meat tunic in feral dog country” is undoubtedly a very bad idea) and it’s message is loud and clear:

Age-appropriate dressing is officially dead.

We wear what we love to wear. Increased confidence is one of the best things about aging and it’s the key to your natural charisma. This is what people will initially find the most fascinating about you. Your age is really just a number, and the world is about to see what you are made of!

I on Image at work -Creating ageless and timeless looks

This great Guardian article by Alyson Walsh of inspirational style blog That’s not my age from last week made good fashion resolutions for grownups.

“…beyond a certain age, style becomes personal. The urge to buy into every trend subsides and it’s all about finding an individual look; one that’s timeless and ageless and works for you.”

http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2016/jan/04/silk-shirts-and-silver-shoes-2016-style-resolutions-for-grownups?CMP=twt_gu

These are basically the same style dilemmas my clients battle with. I do my very best every day to help my clients find their own style that tells their story. I often get asked how. This is how I roll at I on Image.

Photo credits Rudi Wells at www.rudiwells.com

First I dive inside your wardrobe. I build strong looks from the items you already have. I take a critical look at each piece. Some may have to go, some will be replaced. I hang your complete outfits from Monday to Friday in your closet for fast and easy mornings. Often there are more than 5 outfits. And even more often the clients get inspired and creative along the process! Every outfit is documented and we take photos. Getting a sudden invitation will never be a fashion dilemma for you again. Your personal style journal will always have an answer for you.

Then we make a shopping list to fill in the gaps in your style narrative. I take in consideration your existing wardrobe, body shape, colours, budget and other special wishes. Many clients are surprised how short the list can be. My last client really needed just a perfect black jacket and a couple of shirts to replace the old ones.

Finally we hit the shops. Some clients like to shop on their own when they know what they are looking for. I am happy to shop with those who prefer gentle guidance. I know brands, materials, current trends and styles that will flatter you forever. Some customers feel confident enough to shop alone after a few rounds, some love the service so much that they don’t want to shop alone ever again.

I enjoy the most to see the glow of confidence and excitement on my client’s face when they try on an outfit or an item of clothing that speaks volumes on them. It belongs to their story and they know it.

“As Iris Apfel says, in life and in fashion: “It’s good to maintain a sense of wonder.”

Book your own personal shopping session by filling in the form below this post or drop me an email to ionimage@gmail.com. I am looking forward to working with you!
