How to Dress Things Down?

Is your wardrobe full of formal work wear from the time when business style was far more dressier than it nowadays is? Predominant IT and start-up culture have molded the way we dress to work a lot in the recent years and suddenly a suit with a pair of heels can feel somewhat stuffy. But throwing away fine tailoring just feels wrong, and if it still fits then perhaps you could just wear it in a less formal way.

Here comes I on Image’s style guide on how to dress things down. You can mix up the elements listed below or just pick one powerful way to express yourself through your style.

  1. Add a casual shoe. This is the most practical dress-down effect there ever was and hence an all-time favorite of public transport commuters around the world. Your feet will thank you for swapping your vertiginous heels to a comfy sneaker or a cool loafer. There is no longer need to keep a pair of heels in your filing cabinet which I believe they got rid of anyway during the last office remodeling round.
  2. Add knitwear. I am a big fan of creating contrast by using different textures and playing with proportions. Typically I would use chiffon with tweed or cashmere with leather but the logic can also be applied with tailored pieces in a mid-weight fabric by adding a chunky cable knit jumper. Understated merino wool jumpers go literally with everything and are far more low maintenance than gorgeous cashmere that I would love if I didn’t have kids. Knitwear with a pop of colour combined with tailoring looks also very contemporary and is super wearable.
  3. Add denim. A high-low combo is a no-brainer that does apply for evening wear too. The contrast between something dressy and cool denim remains a classic styling trick favored by the best dressed everywhere. Easy, practical and stylish way to wear your tailored separates or dresses.
  4. Add leather. This is just like the tip above but dressier and a more powerful statement. My favorite is to throw a biker jacket on a feminine dress.
  5. Add a T-shirt. T-shirts with a print or a slogan have been popular for quite some time now and they will make any tailored piece look casual and cool. Just check the appropriateness of the picture/text and that it doesn’t spell something else when worn with a jacket. A safe fail-proof alternative is a stripy or plain, yet well,-cut T-shirt.

These 5 ways to dress your outfits down will help you get more out of your existing wardrobe without having to transform your style completely. They will also allow you to own less items while having more style -every single day.

How to Dress Things Up?

Is your trusted daily uniform of a plain shirt and basic denim making you yawn of boredom when catching a glimpse of yourself in a mirror? Do you feel that it doesn’t look interesting enough so people would remember you for right reasons? Or could a more lively outfit express your dynamic personal brand better? Don’t go ditching an otherwise great combo right away as I think it could be easily saved for a round two by just adding a little oomph into it.

Here comes I on Image’s style guide on how to dress things up. You can mix up the elements listed below or just pick one remarkable way to inject some well-deserved energy into your look.

  1. Add a tailored jacket. Nothing says business better than sleek tailoring. If the look feels too stiff for your taste then play it down by rolling the sleeves and popping the collar up for relaxed cool.
  2. Add a fancy shoe. What a perfect opportunity to get some use of the shoe that makes your heart skip a beat but which you keep 364 days a year stored neatly in their box. Let’s go live a little and wear them to work.
  3. Add statement jewelry but don’t go piling it all on at once. One signature piece is enough to wake up the room. Another idea is to go full-on Iris Apfel and wear every single piece of jewelry you have ever owned in one single look.
  4. Add a scarf in a stylish print or in your signature colour. My favorites are small silk squares tied elegantly on a simple knot in the front and large squares folded loosely around the neck.
  5. Tuck your shirt in and add a belt. This look is a classic structured way to make you look more polished without actually having to do anything. I love pleated leather belts and chunky belts with a statement buckle.

These 5 ways to dress up your otherwise plain or basic outfits can also help you navigate your style on days when you have an event right after work and no time to change, decrease the amount of luggage during business travel and allow you to own less items while having more style -every single day.

Extend the Life of Your Summer Dress

So you bought yourself a gorgeous summer dress, wore it all summer and now you are experiencing difficulties parting with it. No worries. I on Image wants you to keep on wearing it until the first snowfall or torrential autumn storm and here’s a complete guide on how.

Photo credits Vaibhav Kashyap on Stocksnap.io

Welcome the new season by styling your summer dress in a new I on Image-proof way:

  1. Wear it with opaque tights. Legs getting covered around town is the first sign of autumn. This look will make hemlines even on the shorter side appropriate for the office and give you an instant leg-lift. Flattering, cheap and practical.
  2. Wear it with chunky knitwear. Nothing says autumn better than a cosy cable-knit in an earthly colour. Chunky knitwear combines well with florals and flowy summer fabrics and anchors your look into the new season. This look has a practical side to it too as the mornings can suddenly feel chilly. Wrap up and feel as cosy as you look.
  3. Wear it with boots. A pair of leather boots will add edge to romantic and carefree summer styles. This look is always cool and admittedly very handy in rain, which we will be undoubtedly getting plenty of.
  4. Wear a T-shirt under it. Strappy sundresses have a seemingly short life span but I like to challenge that by wearing a simple fitted T-shirt under them. This 90’s inspired look is very now and it gives you more coverage for an office-appropriate attire.
  5. Wear a polo neck under it. This look has the same effect as above but with even more coverage for chilly autumn days. This look works well with sheath dresses, pinafore dresses and short-sleeved dresses.

See, there is no reason to pack away something that you love so much and that looks so great on you!

Friday Style Secrets

follow I on Image’s video series Friday Style Secrets on Facebook and instagram for easy, fun and informative insider style tips

I saw a need for this series because it’s the small things that often have the biggest results. The series was originally launched in March 2017 and it got fast popular among I on Image’s fans. Spring 2018 I reran the series on both Facebook and Instagram because it just felt like waste of good material to show every episode just once. Now it’s an I on Image staple and people are waiting for new episodes to come out. I just went to a party where a lady recognized me as The Friday Style Secret presenter and that felt really nice after all the hard work I put into the series!

I have deliberately kept the videos short so you can take a quick look during your busy day. All videos are open to commenting so if you have any thoughts or questions, please go ahead and ask in the comments section even if the video is already old. You can see all the previous episodes here on I on Image’s Facebook page or  by following #FridayStyleSecrets hashtag on Instagram.

I am also very curious to know what would YOU like to see more. Email your creative ideas to ionimage@gmail.com with subject “Friday Style Secrets” and I will do my best to include your wishes in the new episodes. The new season airs on Friday 7th September 2018 around lunch time.

Stay tuned!

I am really enjoying making this series for your benefit. Hope you like it as much as I do!

My Summer Essentials

Summer essentials are the items that make your summer. Think sunglasses, maxi dress, that turquoise necklace that takes you right back to Amalfi coast… Without them summer just wouldn’t be the same. Mine tend to change a bit every year but in principle these are the items that I always pack with me and I couldn’t imagine a summer without them.

This is my list:

1. Printed maxi-dress and a pretty handbag

2. White broderie anglaise

3. Simple navy sundress that goes with literally everything

4. Large sunhat

5. Embellished shoes with a fun pedicure

6. Sunglasses with an attitude

Girl, You’re a Super Star

Spring is in the air! It’s time to update your wardrobe to the new season and lighten up in general. Stylist Jenni Ryynänen of I on Image is adding a splash of optimistic yellow in your look and combining it with easy-going denim for an effortless cool girl-next-door-look. Forget about complicated pieces and high-maintenance. Our March fashion edit is dedicated to fabulous, fun and fierce women who do things their way, are kind and compassionate, yet brave and righteous. They go a mile for a friend in need but respect their boundaries and know when to walk away. They are forever curious, passionate and inspiring. May we be them, may we raise them!

Monique Magazine March 2018 Edition

  1. Victoria by Victoria Beckham wool sweater. Combine with classic blue denim and a comfy platform sneaker or spice up your classic tailoring with this springy shade. It may look sunny out there but, I tell you, it’s actually still freezing cold so a warm sweater will be a staple for at least two more months, if not longer.
  2. Dolce & Gabbana round golden sunglasses with colourful crystals. I am always a fan of extravaganza and over-the-top maximalism. With these you can keep the rest of the outfit simple or just forget about all the rules and go full-on bling. Just because you can.
  3. Stella McCartney denim jacket with distressed stars. A good denim jacket is an investment with a high return. It goes with pretty much everything and tends to age very well. I bought my previous one in Berlin in year 2000 and only now it’s starting to fall apart. Talking about price per wear ratio!
  4. See by Chloé denim skirt with scalloped and frayed hemline. A denim skirt is the cool girl’s way to transition from trousers to skirts. The A-line makes it easy to wear for most body shapes and I love the retro style front buttoning. Pair with a chunky platform or a sleek sneaker.
  5. See by Chloé ruffled high-neck silk dress. Nothing quite says spring than a boho-chic tiered dress in a breezy fabric and a sunny colour. Toughen up the romantic look with a denim jacket and a shoe that you can take the world in. Add sunnies and an vintage inspired crossbody bag.
  6. Baum und Pferdgarten joggers with side stripes and buttons. A chic jogger sounded impossible on a paper a few years ago but it proved to be a hot item that isn’t going to leave the scene anytime soon. As stated in my January edit (https://moniquemagazine.com/clean-slate/), athleisure will remain a global megatrend in 2018 and for a good reason. There are not many items that can accommodate looking streamlined yet relaxed in one look. Combine yours with a denim jacket and a pair of sneakers. Heels give an amazing contrast to a sporty look.
  7. Stella McCartney Elyse denim platform brogues. For every person who has ever suspected if eco-friendly or vegan shoes can really be cool I have presented exhibit A: every shoe Stella McCartney has ever designed. Loving the raw denim combined with cork and the cut-outs, not to mention the playful polka dots. Wear with mini, midi or cropped.
  8. See by Chloé Hana small crossbody bag in a spicy yellow hue. A true classic for it’s bohemian details and laid-back saddle shape.
  9. Kenzo Move sneaker. Kenzo’s signature tiger roars in these vintage style sneakers. Combine with anything that would otherwise look too conventional or trying too hard. These shoes will take you to places!

Be My Valentine

Our February fashion story is dedicated to love. There is of course Valentine’s Day on 14th February but in these modern days you are allowed to have your own interpretation of what love really means to you. Whether your love is the traditional “you&me forever”-scenario, or you are embracing your secret romance with a lovely lover from Loverville, or your love is one big universal love, or you are just celebrating love -and lust- for life in general, this is the perfect time to open your heart for a little bit more of it. Stylist Jenni Ryynänen of I on Image has hand-picked us a romantic selection from the latest collections in feminine dusty pink hues, rose gold accents and pearls. These items echo nostalgia and beautiful things from the past, but still have a sophisticated and strong modern feel to them. Here’s to love, the most powerful force in the world!

Monique Magazine February 2018 Edition

Monique Magazine February 2018 Edition

1. Acne Toronto wool scarf with logo. Wrap yourself warm under this large blanket-like scarf that will keep you warm even if your lover is far away.
2. Skagen Agnethe rose gold coloured stainless steel pearl earrings. Beautiful scandi-minimalism for making a statement with your jewelry every day.
3. Marlies Dekkers Viva La Vida corset (3.1) with matching Brazilian briefs (3.2. picture is from the back). This Dutch designer makes underwear for strong grown-up women and her Frida Kahlo inspired collection is no exception. It brings the life and work of artist Frida Kahlo into the spotlight and celebrates her creativity and remarkable stamina.
4. Serge Lutens Féminité du Bois Eau de Parfum 50ml. This earthy cedar wood scent expresses the masculine side of femininity and has been described as revolutionary.
5. Sandro pink lace dress with white accents. I love the playful vintage feel of this dress. Wear with a classic block heel for a romantic look or add a modern twist with a sleek trainer.
6. Swarovski Iconic Swan Ring. This open ring has a stunning crystal encrusted black swan and a simple pearl on the other end.
7. Chloé Marcie mini crossbody bag in powdery pink leather. Great investment piece with a flowy boho touch that is Chloé’s signature style.
8. Skagen Agnethe rose gold coloured stainless steel bracelet with pearl. Match with the earrings mentioned above or wear on it’s own.
9. Salvatore Ferragamo Luca pump with low flower heel and sophisticated round toe. Wear with mini dresses that would look too much with a stiletto or soften up your boyish denim.

Clean Slate

Let’s kick off 2018 with a clean slate. That means forgetting about the past, forgiving others and yourself, giving a promise about a better future and wishing amazing things to one another. Good resolutions are also in order. There is no other colour that symbolizes successful new beginnings better than white. It’s the colour associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. Stylist Jenni Ryynänen of I on Image has selected the best winter whites for you to step into New Year in style.

Monique Magazine January 2018 Edition

Monique Magazine January 2018 Edition

  1. Tigha Louna lace dress with frilled sleeves. White dresses are no longer reserved for only balmy summer days. They are wearable in the winter with black opaque tights and a chunky cardigan during the day. Add statement earrings for an epic night out.
  2. Moncler Gamme Rouge Nynke tweed jacket with shearling collar. There is no better signature style than wearing a chic statement jacket. It gives you an instant image revamp and upgrades your basic outfits in a flash. Wear over a lacy dress or sleek leather leggings, add snow boots or mile high heels.
  3. Maje Mila cable knitted jumper with black imitation leather accents. Heritage knitwear is having a huge moment in fashion. This one is sweet and edgy at the same time and you know how I love contrasts. Wear with sporty pants or a sweet pleated skirt.
  4. Arma Roche Plonge lamb leather leggings. Leggings are going to be big news in 2018 but not in the way you are used to wearing them. The key looks will be daring and have a luxurious feel to them. These leather leggings will tick all the boxes while being a rather versatile style to own. Wear with chunky knitwear, billowy blouses or layered under dresses. Take inspiration from glitterati après ski in Gstaad.
  5. Philipp Plein Corinne calf leather shoulder bag. New Year deserves a gorgeous new bag. I love the white pristine leather combined with studs, chain shoulder strap and a crystal encrusted cougar clasp. Perfect for your inner Snow Queen!
  6. Nubikk Giga Roma patent leather ankle boots. Beautiful 60’s style ankle boots pair well with surprisingly many styles: Mini and maxi dresses, culottes, wide and skinny trousers. I would combine mine with high wasted mom jeans and cosy heritage jumper for the day and an Audrey Hepburn inspired mini dress for the evening.
  7. Maurice Lacroix Eliros diamond watch. A stylish time piece symbolizes new beginnings so no wonder they make popular gift items for a special occassion: graduation, promotion and retirement, to mention a few. Your watch -or the lack of it- says a lot about you and is considered as one of the key items when building a signature style. One with diamonds radiates timeless elegance and sophisticated femininity.
  8. Armani EA7 Core waterproof skipants. Life is too short to be freezing yourself to an icicle. Solve the problem by wearing pants that work wonders in subzero temperatures like these amazingly sleek ones that are also waterproof. Athleisure will remain a global megatrend in 2018 so if you haven’t opted in yet, now it’s the time to hop on the trend of practicality and comfort without having to sacrifice the style.

Here’s to a prosperous and wonderful 2018!

Sparkles

This is the time of the year when the party calendar is full and the dark nights are an open invitation to wear something that shimmers. Stylist Jenni presents her glamorous selection from the latest party collections to kick off the most wonderful time of the year in style. There are also loads of wonderful gift ideas for yourself -or someone really special- and many useful party season styling tips.

May your days be merry and bright!

SPARKLES December Edition 2017 for Monique Magazine

Monique Magazine December 2017 Edition

  1. Josh V golden biker jacket. Make a statement by toughening up your look with this striking biker jacket. Wear with denim, LBD, floor length gowns… Practically anything that needs a little -or a lot- oomph. Note to self and y’all: You can be spotted all the way from Mars so be prepared to get all the attention.
  2. Blush 14k gold hoop earrings with zirkonias and 14k gold stud earrings with zirkonias. I am a big fan of simple sparkling earrings that bring a touch of luxury to your trusted basics. These are also ideal for situations when your outfit is so over the top that jewelry needs to be simple yet sophisticated. Believe it or not it happens to me quite often!
  3. Inna customized dress with high frilled neck and bow tie. With the ever rising popularity of slow fashion nothing says timeless elegance better than made to measure clothing. These dresses are available in many styles and colours to fit every shape and taste. Please note that a couple of fitting sessions are required but then you can be sure that your dress is a true match to your body shape.
  4. Josh V glitter and gold wrap mini dress. If you are looking for a true va-va-voom dress this Christmas, look no further. This ticks all the boxes: High octane shine, check. Plunging neckline, check. Figure hugging, check. For a more modest look, layer it over a turtle neck and wide leg trousers. For a rock chick look layer over black leather-look leggings and add a smokey eye and a truckload of jewelry.
  5. Blush 14k gold necklace with zirkonia pendant and 14k gold chain. Layering necklaces is a fun way to create some panache in your everyday look and the style works really well at parties too. Start with two delicate chains in the same metal and start elevating your personal style from there. These come in various styles and metals accompanied by a collection of pendants. Never underestimate how desirable the smallest of packages under the tree can be!
  6. Josh V golden patent leather ankle boots. No time or energy to dress up after a hectic day? Wear these statement boots with your trusted denim and an oversized cashmere sweater. Jewelry is optional if you managed to slick on a hasty statement lip.
  7. Blush 14k gold rings with and without zirkonias. They come in various contemporary and classic styles, and are therefore ideal for stacking and collecting. Mix and match creatively different metals and textures to make the look your own. Remember also that tiny presents travel really well and that they make perfect stocking fillers.
  8. Anna + Nina golden shell minaudière. There is something utterly fascinating about pretty little bags that don’t fit anything in them. The idea of leaving the house with only a lipstick, pin card and keys just feels so wonderfully decadent and joyous. Where is the girl carrying that bag going? Who is meeting? Where will she end up? Big questions for such a little bag. If you are a free spirit only in your dreams then opt for a coat with big pockets that will fit everything else.
  9. Josh V golden patent leather stilettos with transparent insert. Make a big impact in metallic heels that are huge news this season. I promise that they are surprisingly versatile and ten times more festive than any neutral shade would be. They add instant glam to the simplest of outfits. Skip the boring going-home-to-change-part and just slip your feet into these shiny babes comes happy hour.
  10. Anna + Nina gold plated brass Ginko leaves statement necklace. This necklace is a powerful way to style your office look into a party look in a flash. This speedy transformation from office to OMG can be done easily in the back of an Uber. They also have matching earrings available for maximum impact. On a big night out wear with a crisp white blouse and a full skirt.
  11. Anna + Nina gold plated brass shell statement earrings. Set your minimalistic LBD apart with a pair of larger than life statement earrings. Just slick your hair back and add a dramatic lip. Alternatively pay homage to recently deceased maestro Azzedine Alaïa and wear an unapologetic body con dress.

HOW TO WEAR SPARKLY LOOKS OF THIS SEASON:

  • Combine shiny items with clashing textures. Think cashmere, wool, leather and denim.
  • Don’t reserve the sparkles only for the night. They work really well in the daytime too with a big sweater and opaque tights.
  • Choose one amazing sparkly item per look and keep the rest simple to avoid an overdose of sequins.
  • Keep the makeup simple yet powerful with emphasis on the lips or on the eyes, never both.
  • Don’t take yourself too seriously. The party season was invented for the people to have fun!
