Finnish Women’s Day 2018 – 30th Anniversary Edition

This year’s event was held on 14th – 15th April 2018 in Hotel Bilderberg Résidence Groot Heideborgh in Garderen, and it marked the 30th anniversary of Finnish Women’s Day NL. The event is an annual weekend event full of fun, friendship, learning, networking and relaxing. This  year this very special edition gathered together 120 Finnish women living mainly in the Netherlands, but we also had participants who traveled all the way from Belgium and Finland to connect with old and new friends. For me this was the 6th time I attended and had a wonderful time, as expected!

Here is our group photo. I am happy to report that nobody fell in the pond during the photo shoot! The red goodie bags full of amazing surprises (including a discount voucher from I on Image) were sponsored by Jaatinen L6S Consulting.

My company I on Image was, 3rd year in a row, a proud sponsor of the event and donated 3 gift vouchers in the immensely popular raffle. The raffle tickets were selling like hot cakes! These envelopes that I am holding contain each a gift voucher for a 45 minute online image scan with I on Image. Congratulations to the lucky winners! The beautiful program booklet is designed by graphic designer Päivi Kärkkäinen who has also helped I on Image with flyer designs in the past.

Our Saturday afternoon program contained a hilarious theater show “Rosa Liksom’s Women”, “Rosa Liksomin Naisia”, written by Finnish author Rosa Liksom and performed by Finnish actors Mira Kivilä and Marja-Leena Kouki. I am a huge fan of Liksom and read many of her books so I knew a little bit what to expect. This play was a compilation of short stories spiced up with dark humor and dialect of the northern Finland. I thought it was just priceless!

Rosa Liksomin Naisia. Photo credits and bookings: www.meebu.fi

After the theater it was time for the first round of workshops. I hosted a workshop “Colourful Life”, “Värikäs elämä”, during which I helped the participants to choose their best colours that make them radiate, to select optimal accent colours and metal colour that flatters their complexion the most. I challenged the popularity of an all-black wardrobe, which of course is practical and always stylish, but may feel a bit boring after years and years of wear. Especially in the spring even I as a neutral-addict really love to see a pop of colour. Life is short and style should be also fun! Each participant went home with a little colour booklet that will help them to plan their outfits and to shop for new items.

In the evening we had a delicious dinner at the hotel and after that we headed to the 30th birthday party of the event where Finnish musician Tom Eklund performed with his band Liivit Boys. Eklund is famous from 2015 Voice of Finland and now tours around Finland performing his own music and covers. It was a great gig! The party was heaps of fun and we danced with a DJ well past midnight. The closing song was of course Finnish singer Paula Koivuniemi‘s epic “Aikuinen Nainen”, an ode to the adult woman, that we all sang together shoulder to shoulder.

Curious fact: The night before, 13th April, Tom Eklund performed in Martinlaakso, Vantaa with Neumann who was the star of our last year’s event. Coincidence?

Tänään Neumann & Tomppa @barnr1vantaa klo 23 ! Liput 7e ! Tervetuloa ! 😎👍 #neumann #neumannduo #nipaneumann…

On Sunday we enjoyed an energizing breakfast and after the morning program had another round of workshops. This time I could participate myself and chose a career workshop hosted by business coach Mari Tasanto, director of HRM Partners. During the workshop we learned about the latest work trends, how they affect us, what opportunities they can offer to us and what skills are needed in order to adapt. All in all a very informative package that sparked some good thoughts and lively debate.

That was my report from the 30th anniversary event of Finnish Women’s Day NL. Hope you enjoyed reading it. I am looking forward to the next year’s event already!

You can see more fun photos from the weekend on I on Image’s Instagram page or follow #SNPaivat. You can also read my reports from previous years: 2016 in Zutphen and 2017 in Garderen.

Congratulations again to the lucky winners of I on Image’s gift vouchers and a massive thank you for all the participants and volunteer organizers for the memorable weekend!

Finnish Women’s Day 2017 in Garderen

Last weekend  I attended the 29th edition of Finnish Women’s Day in Garderen. It’s an annual event full of fun and friendship that gathered together an all-time record amount of 120 Finnish women living in the Netherlands and Belgium. There was also a nice amount of ladies who have lived in the Netherlands before and wanted to come and see their friends again. This year I gave up my spot in the organizing committee to wonderful new talent and fresh ideas and attended the event as a guest for change. Of course I on Image was a proud sponsor of the event and donated 3 gift vouchers in the immensely popular raffle where the prizes are getting every year more and more amazing.

Finnish Women’s Day NL 2016 was organized in Bilderberg Hotel ’t Speulderbos Garderen. Photo credits: Stichting Finnish Women’s Day Netherlands

This year the event joined in Finland’s centennial celebrations under theme Suomi 100 and Finnish flags were waving in the air throughout the weekend in the lovely hotel Bilderberg Hotel ‘t Speulderbos. This year’s guest performer was Neumann from Finnish 80’s cult band Dingo. We got to meet our childhood idol before the evening concert and getting a photo together was a must!

The anticipated highlight of the event, a themed evening party on Saturday, was celebrated with dress code blue&white. How else? First we experienced a beautiful performance from Finnish Female Choir TAIKA over a glass of bubbly. Then we enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner in the hotel’s restaurant. After the dinner we all moved to the ball room to listen to Neumann’s concert. It was really amazing to hear all those songs again!

The weekend proved again the power of Finnish women coming together. We have a strong community and it’s something to be proud of. I very much enjoyed the crafts workshops I attended. It’s nice to do something with your hands for a change. I made nice new connections and got inspired to participate in some new initiatives. More information will follow on my social media so stay tuned. You can see more fun photos from the weekend on I on Image’s Instagram page @ionimage or follow #SNPaivat.

Congratulations to the lucky winners of I on Image’s gift vouchers! massive thank you for all the participants and organizers for the memorable weekend!

I on Image is celebrating 1 year in business

I on Image is today officially ONE YEAR in business! What a journey it has been and there are more adventures lined up in the future!

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way and a special thank you to my amazing clients for making this year a blast!

I ON IMAGE

Like I on Image on Facebook and comment on the competition post to get a chance to WIN a FREE IMAGE CONSULTING SESSION (1h) in Amsterdam area. Competition closes in one week, on Saturday 20th August 2016. Scroll down to the end of the post for more details!

My journey as an entrepreneur started many months, if not years, before the official date, 12th August 2015 that was the date when I registered my company at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. I had been dreaming of my own business for a long time and after my second baby was born in 2014 it became very clear to me that I won’t be returning to the corporate world any time soon. I wanted my own schedule and my own terms so I could continue doing what I am passionate about without sacrificing my family life (and sanity, if that’s worth anything) in the process. People always told me why don’t you just start your own business but it took me a while to gather the courage and make my dreams come true. One Saturday evening in April I told my husband that I was going to start a business… and so I did.

I launched my Facebook page and my website already on the same night and with shaky hands pressed “publish” thinking that there is no going back now, I am going to do this! I had no idea about so many things but I was hungry to find out. I loved being my own finance, PR, HR, marketing and sales. I sat long lonely nights on my laptop, typically after the children went to bed until midnight, if not longer, polishing my social media pages and my website, finding out better ways to do things and getting inspired by the stories of other businesses, both big and small. The world is full of advice and tools for sale, do’s and don’t and musts, but it soon became very clear to me that there is no other way to do this than my own way. The business had to look like me and it’s heart needs to beat in the same rhythm as mine, there was no other way. It wasn’t a matter of copy-paste & done, there were no shortcuts. I needed to find my own voice to express my passion to be able to appeal to my ideal client. And so I worked more long lonely nights.

I networked live and online, I took courses and seminars, I participated events, I spoke to a lot of people and I listened carefully what they had to say. I did a couple of pilot clients and got even more convinced that I am on a right path. I felt like I was doing a job that felt like a hobby and I was loving every minute of it. One day I got my first paying client! I will never forget it. She was wonderful and I am still in touch with her. It has been a pleasure to follow her journey to success and recently I saw her radiate on stage at an event. I was filled with immense pride to be able to a part of that story. Many other clients followed soon and many other success stories were written. I had the privilege to arrive in people’s lives at a precious moment of change and to be a part of that incredible transformation that the outer world can see through the appearance and style. The undeniably best part of my job is to see that sparkle in my clients’ eyes when they look themselves in a mirror feeling like they are ready to take over the world.

Today I am only one year wiser but nonetheless so very proud that I have gotten this far. I am determined to be better, to give more and to add more value to my clients’ lives. These were my goals for 2016 and I am ticking the boxes every week. It’s fantastic to be one year old and right on track!

Goals2016

Here’s to many more stylish years to come!

Greetings from SPARK 2016

Last month I had the pleasure to join an amazing group of speakers at SPARK 2016 conference that was held at We Work Metropool on 14th June 2016.

This was my first public speaking event in years so you can only imagine how nervous I was. Last year I volunteered at the event and got so inspired that I set myself a goal to speak there the next year. When I found out that I was accepted to speak at the event this year my feelings ranged from sheer excitement to paralyzing fear of failure. How could I possibly measure up with the other speakers who were so much more experienced than I was? The Spark organization must have read my thoughts because us speakers received a fantastic prepping session from Tara Phillips of Cause & Affect Speeches. I can warmly recommend her sessions to everyone looking to upgrade their public speaking skills. It took me a pile of colourful PostIts, several cups of green tea (okay, some wine may have been consumed in the process too…) and a mini vacation to Venice, but one day I just was ready to talk about Polishing Your Personal Image.

The day was kicked off by an upbeat key note speech from Colleen Geske, the brain behind a hilarious blog-turned-bestseller: Stuff Dutch People Like. She spoke about her way to success, hickups on her book publishing path and that ugly moment when she got mansplained. I knew about SDPL but I could never imagine it’s owner was such a fantastic person. We all have a lot to learn from Colleen and I admire her wit and perseverance. Long story short:

Your success should look like you and no-one else.

For me this was definitely highlight of the conference -and that was only the beginning! Colleen’s speech was soon followed by a break-out session from Stephanie Ward of Firefly Coaching. I had the pleasure to meet Stephanie at the last year’s event and I have been a keen follower of her work ever since. With Stephanie it feels like you have your very own marketing department and this year’s theme “Pricing & Packaging Tips to Create a Business Model that Serves You & That Your Clients Love” was yet another dip into the eternal pool of her wisdom.

After delicious and healthy Cropbox lunch it was time for more break-out sessions and my speech. My topic was “Polishing Your Personal Image”. I approached the subject from three different angles: Communication, appearance and digital presence. These elements form your image that is your best calling card and the only aspect of your career that you have a full control of. Your image is also one of the best self-investments you can ever make. I had a lovely audience who listened carefully and came up with great questions afterwards. Thank you for everyone who came to listen and thank you for the organizers for giving me this wonderful opportunity! If you missed it you can view my slides here.

After the second break-out session we gathered to listen to most inspiring female economy stories at Global Female Entrepreneurship Panel where Maneuela Damant of Open the Door Leadership, Nassira Boudhan of Fashion for Education and Kanak Hirani of Pashm and Karigar shared their views on how to provide opportunities for women around the globe by empowering them. This session was a real eye-opener for me and it had a very powerful message!

Last year I on Image was a proud sponsor of the  fantastic event and it was my first outing as an entrepreneur. I made some really wonderful contacts at the event and with some of them I am still in regular contact. I was delighted to see how this movement has grown over a year, just like my own business has. Read more about my goody bag offer at SPARK 2015 here. Speaking of goody bags: I loved it! My favorite items were healthy EatLiveLoveFood crackers and a fun desk exercise card from TotalSelf. We even did some of the exercises in the interactive session “When you thrive, your business thrives: Best practices for protecting your most important asset” but your own desk at home or at the office is probably the place where they are most efficient. Either way:

Remember to take care of number one (yes, that’ll be you).

It’s not selfish, it’s an investment.

The wonderful day was closed by Emmy McCarthy of Emmy McCarthy Consulting. I am a long-term fan of Emmy who is best known for her community building at Amsterdam Mamas where I volunteer as a community admin since 2014. Emmy starting her own consulting business was huge news in our community because everyone was always asking for advice from her and wondering if they should really be on the clock since she always managed to have the best ideas and answers for us. Her closing notes were no exception to this. I was particularly fond about her views on how individuals can add value to their communities by simply contributing to them. Her observations were sharp and spot on:

“Focusing on collaborative growth allows us to drive forward a new economic model that is focused on the value which we provide to our communities rather than the value that we can extract from them.” -Emmy McCarthy

You can read her closing notes in full on her blog post.

It was so nice to see everyone again and to make new connections. I felt I was a part of something very special and that energy carries a long way.

Thank you for everyone who made this inspiring day possible!

I am looking forward to the 2017 event already!

Finnish Women’s Day 2016 in Zutphen

12985476_10153541069807469_3371561554742852198_n

A few of weeks ago I traveled to Zutphen for the 28th edition of Finnish Women’s Day. It’s an annual event full of fun and friendship that gathered together 94 Finnish women living in the Netherlands. This was my second year in the organizing committee and a truly wonderful experience! The event’s special guests were Finland’s craziest shop keeper couple, social media phenomenon from a small village Äkäslompolo in Lapland, Sampo and Minttu Kaulanen of Jounin Kauppa. They spoke us about their stellar success, stamina and perseverance, family life and love under the event’s theme, untranslatable quintessentially Finnish term, SISU.

Our event guests Sampo and Minttu Kaulanen of Jounin Kauppa in their evening dress up party gear. Photo credits: Stichting Finnish Women’s Day Netherlands

According to Sisu- expert Emilia Lahti SISU “is extraordinary courage and determination in the face of adversity. It’s about not seeing a silver lining in the clouds, and yet jumping into the storm anyways. At the core of sisu is the idea that in each of us there is more strength that meets the eye.” And for me as a Finnish native this is something I can relate to in my own life. Despite of living over a decade abroad I am still through and through Finnish and feel like I owe a lot in my life to sisu so I really enjoyed listening to the talks under this theme. It’s a long standing tradition that on Saturday evening there is a party where everyone dresses up according to the theme. I went as Rosie the Riveter -who else?

I had the pleasure to host a style workshop under theme Last chance inspired by my popular service Personal shopping in your own wardrobe.  Each participant could bring to the workshop a few items from home, that have been causing them headache. We analyzed each item and thought creative new ways to wear them. As a starting point we used body shape analysis, colour seasons and great basic wardrobe that allows easy mixing and matching. The time flew by having fun! It was almost meant to be that one of my workshop participants won I on Image gift voucher in the Sunday raffle.

Congratulations to the lucky winner and thank you for all the participants!

Back to Work -SPARK2015 Mini-Makeover

I on Image was a proud sponsor of SPARK2015 and slipped a freebie in the participants’ goody bags.

Jam Workspace tells about the unforgettable day on their page like this:

Jam Workspace, Amsterdam Academy and Amsterdam Mamas teamed up to bring you the first ever SPARK in June 2015. Our three organisations joined together to hold this inaugural conference so that female entrepreneurs could: blaze a trail through our professional network, improve our skill sets and ignite the passion for our businesses. It was a sensational day, filled with 11 fantastic presentations, keynotes and of course wonderful people.”

I promised to create each participant one “Back to work” –look using Style Fruits.nl app. The first looks are ready. Which one is your favorite?

Eleonora -Looking for new basics. This black wrap dress looks brilliant on it’s own but you can also wear it over jeans, open or closed. You can wear a long-sleeved turtle-neck or a simple T-shirt under it. A modern kimono jacket is a brilliant alternative for a blazer that can feel stiff in a creative atmosphere. A lace up ankle boot is very cool but a little bit smarter than a biker boot. I have added chunky silver jewellery with an ethnic vibe and a fun fringed tote.

Emmy -Standing out in peacock colours. This turquoise jersey wrap dress is the perfect choice for inverted triangle body shape. Deep V-neck creates an optical illusion of a narrower upper torso whilst wrap-style creates a nice waistline. 3/4 sleeve is ideal for wearing a chunky statement cuff. I have added a long relaxed blazer in cobalt blue with matching ballerina pump. The teal bucket bag can be worn cross body and the purple infinity scarf completes the outfit.

Lauren -Lasting first impressions. When attending networking events add a little spice to your professional look to ensure you stay in people’s mind. Here I have chosen a tailored blazer dress in deep red that is a classic and easy to wear but very much on trend right now. I have added chunky silver costume jewellery, fun and modern monochrome bucket bag and a black pump with a little unusual cut. The little black blazer is collarless so it sits nicely with this dress.

Leticia -Learning to accessorise. Accessories can set of any outfit and with a creative use of them you can maximize the use of your wardrobe. Here I have spiced up a classic shift in navy with a leopard print pump and trendy rose gold jewellery. For balance I have kept the bag simple in practical tan leather. A little fitted cardigan is a relaxed alternative to a blazer. It is just short enough to show the lovely tie detail of the dress.

Renée -Teaching in style. Summery dresses can work for you all year round when accessorized cleverly. This pretty polka dot tea dress in classic navy looks professional when teamed up with a relaxed wrap blazer. I have toughened the look up a bit with a chunky stacked heel ankle boot in beautiful rough all-round tan leather. The roomy leather tote carries all your notes in style. Sleek watch in rose gold and teardrop studs give the outfit an unexpected glamorous aspect.
