In praise of being over-dressed

The festive season being just around the corner I would like to draw your attention to your festive attire. By festive attire I mean wearing something gorgeous, yet appropriate for the occasion.

Necklines too deep and hemlines too short may not fall in the category of appropriate so approach carefully. What I am talking about is lush fabrics, sequins, sparkles, fake fur, decadent cuts and extravagant accessories.

UNEXPECTED advantages of DRESSING UP

In very casual Netherlands I often find myself left disappointed when attending an event where people show up in denim and sneakers when all I was longing was a lineup of beautiful outfits to remember. I am often overdressed at events and I have no plans to change that any time soon. Actually, if I do stop being overdressed, please come and ask if I am okay. What about you? Do you like to blend in or stand out?

Accomplished fashionista Hayley Bloomingdale wrote last year this insightful article for the British Vogue called “In Praise Of Being Over-Dressed” and this time of the year I can’t help but dig it up and re-analyze it despite the obvious fact that my do’s may be far less fancy than those of Ms. Bloomingdale’s and her tribe.

“Being over-dressed has multiple advantages, the first being that it is polite to your host to sartorially honour the effort she has made.”

– Hayley Bloomingdale in British Vogue

I love the way she turns around the old belief that people who like dressing up are only doing it for themselves. Not necessarily. For me it’s of course about the deep love for fashion and over-the-top pieces, but also very much about recognizing other people’s efforts for my convenience.

Make an effort by dressing up

This festive season I recommend giving being over-dressed a try, even if it’s just for once. Next time you get an invitation, go ahead and wear something stunning that you would normally save for special events. See if you feel different and are you being perceived differently. Did you have more fun that way? How many compliments did you get for your outfit? How did the outfit affect your confidence and visibility?

You might have special events coming up but nothing to wear. It’s definitely a better situation than it’s opposite (so many great outfits but nowhere to go) and much easier to fix. I would be delighted to help you get ready for your big night out and I am looking forward to take you shopping (live or online). I also have the fairy godmother-like ability to find something amazing in the back of your closet and styling it in a way that you would have never worn it yourself.

Some party style ideas for you to steal

  • Red dress that stops the traffic
  • Statement jewelry to spice up pretty much any outfit
  • Gorgeous heels that help you paint the town red

Monique Magazine December 2017 Edition

  1. Josh V golden biker jacket. Make a statement by toughening up your look with this striking biker jacket. Wear with denim, LBD, floor length gowns… Practically anything that needs a little -or a lot- oomph. Note to self and y’all: You can be spotted all the way from Mars so be prepared to get all the attention.
  2. Blush 14k gold hoop earrings with zirkonias and 14k gold stud earrings with zirkonias. I am a big fan of simple sparkling earrings that bring a touch of luxury to your trusted basics. These are also ideal for situations when your outfit is so over the top that jewelry needs to be simple yet sophisticated. Believe it or not it happens to me quite often!
  3. Inna customized dress with high frilled neck and bow tie. With the ever rising popularity of slow fashion nothing says timeless elegance better than made to measure clothing. These dresses are available in many styles and colours to fit every shape and taste. Please note that a couple of fitting sessions are required but then you can be sure that your dress is a true match to your body shape.
  4. Josh V glitter and gold wrap mini dress. If you are looking for a true va-va-voom dress this Christmas, look no further. This ticks all the boxes: High octane shine, check. Plunging neckline, check. Figure hugging, check. For a more modest look, layer it over a turtle neck and wide leg trousers. For a rock chick look layer over black leather-look leggings and add a smokey eye and a truckload of jewelry.
  5. Blush 14k gold necklace with zirkonia pendant and 14k gold chain. Layering necklaces is a fun way to create some panache in your everyday look and the style works really well at parties too. Start with two delicate chains in the same metal and start elevating your personal style from there. These come in various styles and metals accompanied by a collection of pendants. Never underestimate how desirable the smallest of packages under the tree can be!
  6. Josh V golden patent leather ankle boots. No time or energy to dress up after a hectic day? Wear these statement boots with your trusted denim and an oversized cashmere sweater. Jewelry is optional if you managed to slick on a hasty statement lip.
  7. Blush 14k gold rings with and without zirkonias. They come in various contemporary and classic styles, and are therefore ideal for stacking and collecting. Mix and match creatively different metals and textures to make the look your own. Remember also that tiny presents travel really well and that they make perfect stocking fillers.
  8. Anna + Nina golden shell minaudière. There is something utterly fascinating about pretty little bags that don’t fit anything in them. The idea of leaving the house with only a lipstick, pin card and keys just feels so wonderfully decadent and joyous. Where is the girl carrying that bag going? Who is meeting? Where will she end up? Big questions for such a little bag. If you are a free spirit only in your dreams then opt for a coat with big pockets that will fit everything else.
  9. Josh V golden patent leather stilettos with transparent insert. Make a big impact in metallic heels that are huge news this season. I promise that they are surprisingly versatile and ten times more festive than any neutral shade would be. They add instant glam to the simplest of outfits. Skip the boring going-home-to-change-part and just slip your feet into these shiny babes comes happy hour.
  10. Anna + Nina gold plated brass Ginko leaves statement necklace. This necklace is a powerful way to style your office look into a party look in a flash. This speedy transformation from office to OMG can be done easily in the back of an Uber. They also have matching earrings available for maximum impact. On a big night out wear with a crisp white blouse and a full skirt.
  11. Anna + Nina gold plated brass shell statement earrings. Set your minimalistic LBD apart with a pair of larger than life statement earrings. Just slick your hair back and add a dramatic lip. Alternatively pay homage to recently deceased maestro Azzedine Alaïa and wear an unapologetic body con dress.

HOW TO WEAR SPARKLY LOOKS OF THIS SEASON:

  • Combine shiny items with clashing textures. Think cashmere, wool, leather and denim.
  • Don’t reserve the sparkles only for the night. They work really well in the daytime too with a big sweater and opaque tights.
  • Choose one amazing sparkly item per look and keep the rest simple to avoid an overdose of sequins.
  • Keep the makeup simple yet powerful with emphasis on the lips or on the eyes, never both.
  • Don’t take yourself too seriously. The party season was invented for the people to have fun!

Season greetings from I on Image

Merry Christmas from I on Image 2016

Dear customers and fans,

Thank you very much for the amazing 2016! It would have not been the same without you. Here’s to another year of impeccable image, magical wardrobes and memorable personal style.

This year I wanted to donate time instead of money, like I did last year, and I was honored to have the opportunity to host a workshop for Empower Amsterdam, a local organization that is empowering job seekers to help themselves.

It was a lovely way to give back to our wonderful community and to support small non-profit organization making a difference in this city that we now call home.

I am also spreading an important message from the organization I volunteer for since 2014, Amsterdam Mamas. Read what I am kindly asking for you to do here in my Facebook post.

I on Image wishes you and your loved ones

a Merry Christmas

and

a Happy New Year 2017!

With love and gratitude,

All I want for Christmas… Makeup Edition

In the end of November I had the pleasure to visit Mineralissima showroom and factory in Hoofddorp. I was welcomed by the founder of the company Finnish Kati van Riet who showed me around and told me her story as a beauty entrepreneur.

Story of Mineralissima

She fell in love with mineral makeup in the US after noticing how well it suited her extremely sensitive skin. Returning from US she realized there was nothing similar available in The Netherlands and so she decided to start her own mineral makeup line Mineralissima in 2008. The business was first operating in her living room and eventually grew to cover wholesale along her popular web shop.

She now has a few employees who make the products and ship the orders. The products are sold all over the Europe and her Facebook page Friends of Mineralissima has almost 7000 likes. Today all Mineralissima products are vegan and all ingredients are sourced from certified EU sources. All ingredients are also certified for not being tested on animals.

New Mineralissima must-haves

Kati showed me proudly her newly launched pressed mineral makeup products: foundations, blushes and eye shadows. I was very excited to get to try the next addition to her mineral makeup family: 2 shades of eye liner pencils, 4 shades of lip liners  and 3 shades of brow pencils. The pencils will be launched before Christmas and being tiny they of course make fantastic stocking fillers.

Mineralissima Product Review

These were the products I tested. Clockwise from left: Pressed mineral blush in Beautifully Bare, pressed mineral foundation in Nellie, pressed mineral eye shadow in Vanilla Latte, mineral eye liner (coming soon!) and mineral lip liner (coming soon!)

1.Pressed mineral blush in Beautifully Bare
This blusher has an amazing amount of pigment so don’t be fooled by this paler than pale looking shade. I first mixed it up with one of the foundations. I love a pale a blusher as I tend to apply it always too generously and end up looking like an extra from Moulin Rouge the movie. This one gave my cheeks my desired fresh looking flush without being too obvious. A big plus for it not having any glitter in it as I can’t stand any glitz in my daytime blusher. All in all a beautiful everyday basic for pale blondes. Brunettes will look amazing in the darker shades.

2. Pressed mineral foundation in Nellie
Finding a foundation that stays put all day long is a real challenge for me and I am a little obsessed about this topic. I loved Mineralissima loose mineral foundation (shade 2.0 for the winter and shade 2.75 for the summer) but the pressed version is thicker and stays on for longer. Go easy on the first layer to avoid looking cakey. You can then add another layer or two on areas that need more coverage. I also applied it gently under my eyes to cover the obvious signs of fatique. After the test I decided that maybe shade Nellie is a bit too dark for my pale December face so I onboarded a lighter shade Amelie. In the spring I will start mixing the two of them together until I have a bit of colour again. I always advice buying two shades of your favorite foundation and mix your own customized shade with the brush.

3. Pressed mineral eye shadow in Vanilla Latte
This eye shadow has a beautiful rich texture and an elegant subtle sheen to it. A shade like this is a great everyday basic that combines well with the darker shades of the series. It has an incredible amount of pigment and competes in the same series with way more expensive products. A must-have in every beauty bag for all eye colours.

4. Mineral eye liner in black
This is a wonderfully soft and creamy eye liner pencil that glides on easily for a defined gaze. It stayed neat for the whole day when used together with pressed mineral eye shadow mentioned above and pressed mineral foundation mentioned above as a base. I like multipurpose items and was delighted to hear that this pencil can also be used on the inner rims of your eyes for a sexy holiday party look. If you really want to make your eyes pop then also rim the upper inner rims of your eyes. It’s tricky but worth the effort. Makeup artists swear by this trick and no professional smoky eye is made without this addition. Get practicing your steady hand now.

5. Mineral lip liner
This lip liner pencil has the same beautiful soft and creamy texture as the eye liner pencil above. I had forgotten this 90’s beauty essential for years and only started wearing a lip liner again after this summer inspired by Victoria Beckham who apparently swears by it. I bought recently many that were either too dry or too hard. I want my lip liner to be so soft that you could also colour the rest of your lips with it for amazing staying power. This definitely gets my vote!

Next steps for mineralissima

At the moment Kati is dreaming about a scrumptious mineral lipstick collection. She has been browsing for a lipstick press to be able to add this beauty essential in her collection that will be launched in 2017. I can’t wait to get to try them on! I am very much looking forward to see the brand new Mineralissima showroom opening in 2017.

GIFT IDEA: They also do gift vouchers that are always a hit among makeup lovers. Tip your secret Santa off by sharing this article or leaving it casually in plain sight.
