Sale Shopping: The Do’s and The Don’ts

I just love a good sale shopping spree! The town is full of bargains at the moment but those bargains can be deceitful. Sometimes there is a reason why an item ended up in sale and sometimes you will find the item of your dreams for half the price. To help you navigate through the racks full of fluorescent florals that hardly looked good on the model, I have compiled a list of the DO’s and the DON’Ts of sale shopping. All rules apply regardless if you are shopping in stores or online.

DO

Plan ahead: Go through your wardrobe and see what you really need. Sales are great for filling in the gaps in your style story and replacing your trusted basics. Look through your calendar for any upcoming events that might require a new outfit. Set yourself a budget.

Buy basics: These pieces are the foundation of your wardrobe and need most often replacing. There is no point paying a full price for them when you can get a full update with a reduced price. I just replaced a bunch of T-shirts. Boring, but we do need them.

Buy classics: These pieces will give you joy for years to come. There are so many lists for the classics every woman and man needs to own but actually you define your own classics. A trench coat is a true classic but so is a biker jacket.

Buy items with WOW-factor: These are the items that make your wardrobe shine. It’s the 3rd stage when building a wardrobe after you have mapped your perfect basics & classics (see points above). These items tend to be pricey and are often made in a limited edition so if you manage to snatch one then you can congratulate yourself. Wear them with denim, flats or a plain T-shirt if the feel too OTT for normal day time use, see point below.

Consider price per wear: This is the real price of an item. The most expensive piece becomes a bargain if you wear it a lot throughout the years. The cheapest item becomes expensive if you wear it only once, or gasp, not even once.

Read the T&C: Check the store’s exchange and return policy. Different rules may apply to sale items.

DON’T

Live in a dream: You are not Carrie Bradshaw. You cycle in the rain. You have children. You don’t have time for ironing or dry cleaning as it is. You don’t have a fancy event every week -or if you do can we please hang out?

Buy trends: The trend is usually over by the time the item reaches the sales rack. Buy only if the trend has your name on it. For me it means broderie anglaise and sequins. I wear both trends regardless of the trends.

Go for second best: If the fit is not right or the colour doesn’t flatter your features move on to the next item. A bargain should never make you feel mediocre. Look for sheer excitement and settle for nothing less.

Give up easily: The best buys are worth the browse. If your size or colour is sold out in store it’s worth checking if it’s available online or in another store. Take a photo of the product details to ensure  that you are hunting for the right one.

Buy it just because it’s on sale:
The piece should still fit, flatter your features and fit your life style. Avoid duplicating items in your wardrobe. There are only so many frilly flower dresses that one summer can handle.

Enjoy your sale shopping,
I hope you will find many fabulous things!

Summer Essentials 2017 by I on Image

In last week’s Friday Style Secrets episode on Facebook and Instagram I invited you to share your summer essentials and later I shared my own favorites that are:

  1. A cotton sundress in a lovely colour or print
  2. Sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin, killer mascara and lip gloss with SPF
  3. Sunglasses with an attitude

Inspired by the video I wanted to share with you more summer essentials that I have found for my clients or for myself. Please note that, as usual, none of the links are affiliate links. I am an independent personal stylist and I take no kick backs from shops for advertising their products. I work with all brands from Primark to Prada and my sole aim is to find the best items for YOU. Should I on Image ever be involved in an affiliate program it will be clearly marked so you can make an educated style choice.

Here you can watch the video on Instagram and add your own summer essentials in the comments section throughout the summer of 2017!

An unfortunate side note: That turquoise necklace that I am wearing on the video snapped last night and my kitchen was full of beads. I was sad because, besides of it being really nice for the summer, I made it myself a few years ago from two old necklaces (the other one was broken and the other one’s metal parts scratched my skin). I must repair it soon!

summer essentials 2017 by I on Image

1. A cotton sundress in a lovely colour or print. This dress will take you from beach to parties. Just change the accessories. Remember to keep it as glam as possible throughout the day. Summer is too short for frumpy. During the day it’s all about the easy breezy summer chic in flat sandals and cool shades. In the evening you can add a comfy wedge heel or platform sandals and jewelry, tons of jewelry. You can belt the dress for a more defined waistline but you can also eat in these dresses, unlike in many other summer frocks that I have seen lately. I have selected only models that are 100% cotton and my strict criteria was that they must allow you to wear a proper bra underneath. I have also sneaked in a plus size dress because I strongly believe that enjoying summer and fashion belongs to everyone!

a) & Other Stories printed cotton shirt dress. Order yours here.

b) ASOS CURVE palm print midi sundress with ruffle. Order yours here.

c) COS Oversized printed T-shirt dress. Order yours here.

2. Sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin, killer mascara and lip gloss with SPF. You will enjoy the summer the most without a sunburn. First, it’s dangerous and aging. Second, it’s as far from chic as can be. So protect yourself. Stay in the shade or use a sunhat. Avoid the frying midday sun (it’s anyway a good excuse for a nap, if your schedule allows).

d) Colorescience Sunforgettable®Brush-on mineral sunscreen SPF 50. Available in 4 shades. Order yours here.

e) Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl waterproof mascara. My sister gave the normal version of this mascara to me as a present and I have been a fan ever since. Order yours here.

f) Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging lip gloss SPF 40 in universally flattering pink. Finding a tinted lip product with this high SPF was not easy! Order yours here.

3. Sunglasses with an attitude. Nothing quite adds attitude to any style of clothing than a pair of really cool shades. They allow you to go #nomakeup, hide the fact that you skipped your boot camp in the park and drank rose on the pier with your girlfriends until you (almost) missed the last bus (*happened to a friend*) and most importantly prevent you from getting that miserable headache that I always get from being in the sun.

g) &Other Stories colour block sunglasses. Order yours here.

h) Jeepers Peepers unisex visor style sunglasses with tortoiseshell and gold frame and brown tinted lens. Order yours here.

i) Le Specs ASHANTI matte quartz  diamond mirror cat-eye sunglasses. Order yours here.

Couldn’t find your style here or hungry for more summer essentials?Book your appointment with I on Image here! If you are short of time ask for our online services available to all locations in the world plus they can be offered with a very short notice. I am also looking forward to shop the summer sales with you, live and online!

FAQ at I on Image

You have questions, I have answers. Welcome to FAQ at I on Image!

1.Who is your typical client?

My typical client appreciates that your image is a powerful form of self-expression and has great impact on how you feel about yourself. They lead busy and versatile lives and want to dedicate time for their friends, families and personal development. They value self-care and are eager to invest in services that make their lives easier.

2. How do the online sessions work?

On popular demand I on Image offers now also online sessions via Skype, WhatsApp or regular call for a lower hourly rate. This option is ideal for those who prefer to have the consulting from the comfort of their own home or office. Online personal shopping has become increasingly popular due to the conveniency of the webshops being open 24/7. Please note that the items and the delivery cost need to be either pre-paid on I on Image’s account of paid by yourself upon checkout. I can arrange fitting sessions at your location and returns on your behalf but those will be charged at regular hourly rate as they involve travel, parking etc.

You can learn more about what is happening during each of I on Image’s services here.
IMAGE CONSULTING
3. Is there a minimum number of hours per appointment?

Yes. I on Image has a 2 hour booking minimum. The optimal duration of one appointment is somewhere between 2-4h. Anything more on one go starts to get quite intense and of course I don’t want to  exhaust you. We can always book a second session on another day. Rome was not built in a day and the same applies to your image. Your booked services will be invoiced after the session and they are calculated in half hour increments. If your session lasts only 1.5h you will still be invoiced for 2h. You can also pay by iZettle if you mention it in advance, make a prepayment on I on Image’s account or pay by cash. A copy of an invoice will always be provided for your records.

4. Do you make BEFORE and AFTER pictures?

Only if you want me to. Most of my clients are uncomfortable having their pictures on the internet, especially the before pictures, and I hated the idea of trying to convince them to do it. Many of my clients prefer anonymity and confidentiality and I want to fully respect that wish. Also everyone has their own unique style that reflects their one-of-a-kind personality. As a professional I understand how to make you shine and look like the best version of you without the need to copy something that is not speaking volumes on you.

PERSONAL SHOPPING

5. Is there a minimum budget for your clients?

No. I work with all budgets and all brands from Primark to Prada. It’s still wise to plan a bit ahead and give the topic some thought to avoid overspending and buyer’s remorse.

6. How do you determine which shops to take a client?

Having worked in fashion retail myself I am quite picky about where I take my clients. I always want to offer an inspiring and pleasant experience for you and to be able to do that I weigh the following aspects:

  • Your wishes: This is where it all starts!
  • Location: I consider distances between shops so that your time is not unnecessarily wasted on travel
  • Shop staff: This is self-explanatory. They just need to be good.
  • Shop selection: I follow my favorite shops actively so I know when it’s the best time to visit them.
  • Shop’s overall experience: I love shops that look nice and display their items well. Clean fitting rooms are a must and big plus if they serve drinks, offer tailoring services and home delivery.

PERSONAL SHOPPING

7. What if I hate shopping?

Majority of my clients find shopping a daunting task and some will exclusively shop online with me for this very reason. Some of my clients have told me that after shopping with me they actually enjoyed shopping because they enjoyed the end results so much. However some will always hate shopping and I fully accept it as long as you agree to try the things on.

8. But what if I love shopping?

I just love shopping with clients who enjoy it as much as I do! Some of my clients who love shopping don’t always know how to pick the best pieces for themselves so hiring me enhances their shopping experience and overall look. Some of my clients just love to have someone shop with them and sometimes they are shopping for an event or a job so important that having a professional with them makes them feel more secure and satisfied about their choices.

Hear it from my amazing clients here.

3 Reasons to Hire Me

It’s time to claim the ownership of your image but what really is the added value of hiring an image consultant? Here I have listed 3 very good reasons to hire me.

Photo credits: Blake Bronstad on Stocksnap.io

1. set yourself apart

Style is a powerful form of self-expression. When there is so much information and materia available it’s easy to loose insight. Sometimes you don’t even know where to begin and that’s when I come to your rescue. I map with your the areas you need the most help with and can give you unbiased advice on your personal image. My job is to make you shine and to make your life easier. I enjoy the most to see the glow of confidence and excitement on my client’s face when they try on an outfit or an item of clothing that speaks volumes on them. It belongs to their story and they know it. Others certainly will notice it!

2. Save Money

I will help you to get rid of the things things in your wardrobe that you no longer need and I will help you rediscover items that you had forgotten about or always found difficult to combine. I know which items are missing from your wardrobe and which items would complete your look. With me you will always shop with an intention. You will never return home from your shopping trip with the 5th black cardigan or a fashionable item that looks dated in a month’s time ever again. I am not a sales person and so I don’t take any kickbacks from shops from your purchases. If I am participating an affiliate program through my website it’s always clearly marked so you can make an educated choice. I shop with all budgets and all brands from Primark to Prada. As a bonus I also know when the sales start and sometimes I can even predict which items will end up in sales so you can snatch them for half the price when the time is right.

3. Save Time

I have made a career of knowing where the best items are hiding. I always find the hidden gems in the fashion jungle. I know which shops have the nicest staff and tidiest fitting rooms. I know when they get new stock and whether they have the possibility to order more of sold out items. I also know the web shops inside out and can search for items online if they are sold out in store. I plan our shopping trip so that we spend minimum time from moving from shop to another. I always keep in mind your budget, your body shape, your colours and your lifestyle. I advice how to wear your outfits and how to take care of them so you can cherish them for years.

I on Image Shops at I am Eva

It didn’t take long for I on Image to find a new obsession for 2017: Shopping at IamEva on Willemsstraat 171 in charming Jordaan in Amsterdam. I met the owner Eva Puerto Pastor through a Facebook group, she invited me to see her store and so I went. Next thing I know I was trying everything on. See my best IamEva looks in photos below.

Visit IamEva at Willemsstraat 171 in Amsterdam or iameva.eu

Eva is from Barcelona and I have a thing for the cool and quirky Barcelona style since forever. Two of my friends from the fashion school moved to Barcelona in the late 90’s and I spent some really good times in the city, including Millenium. It was lovely to see how Eva managed to bring the vibe I love to Amsterdam and make it all work so well. She also sells gift items and loads of incredibly cute stuff for children but of course my eyes were all on the fashion. Here are my best picks for you! All 100% I on Image proof styles that would look amazing in and out of the office.

  1. This ese O ese mohair and glitter jumper in blush pink is my favorite. It’s so soft and the shade is so flattering! Love the 3/4 sleeves showing a little wrist and the subtly open round neckline. The arrow bracelet and the long Chanel-style necklace with charms are also from the shop. The jeans are my own throughout the story. More about the shoes below…

2. Y’all know how impossible it is to find heels that walk well and are not too delicate for Amsterdam (think cobble stones, cycling, weather…). Well, I am delighted to announce that the search can now end. IamEva has brought these super comfortable Eight & October Mary Janes from Barcelona to Amsterdam. They are classic but with a twist of cool. They come in gorgeous reddish brown that looks amazing with our beloved denim and the fringe is just about right. Baby soft sand colour ese O ese jumper with very deep V-neck and scarf are also from the shop.

3. The Eight & October Mary Janes also work well toughening up this otherwise delicate outfit combining an ese O ese mohair and glitter jumper in icy blue and Papillon Rebelle tulle midi skirt in a matching shade. Note about this skirt: It’s done really well! The shops are at the moment full of tulle or lace midi skirts that to my great disappointment have a too short, too tight or a cheapily made lining that rides up your thighs al day driving you mad. Amsterdam based Papillon Rebelle makes theirs oh so lush and full. I can see this style work well also at an Amsterdam style outdoor wedding that requires something gorgeous, a little bit warm but never too stiff. Just add a kilo of bling -and do something about your hair. Mine was on a busy mum ponytail that day as I didn’t think I would end up in a spontaneous fashion shoot!

4. Here you have more ese O ese loveliness: The basic white top worn under is easy to miss as it feels light as a feather against my skin. I am always looking for simply amazing basics and this brand definitely has a few keepers. Stock up before they sell out! The long jacket is also by ese O ese. I like to push the sleeves up to make my look more feminine and a bit nonchalant. I am wearing another pair of Eight & October Mary Janes in here with red, white and blue accents. They were a match made in heaven for the red clutch and blue feather necklace, both from IamEva.

Thank you for having me Eva and hope to go all crazy on fashion at Iam Eva soon again!

I on Image’s Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

I have a confession to make: I am secretly a hopeless romantic. I am not big on commercial holidays but when the chance to celebrate love comes knocking on your door I always end up thinking: “Well, why not”. There is enough misery in this world so why not indeed create a little rose dusted magic where you otherwise wouldn’t find it, well at least not without an effort.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow I have collected my favorite romantic picks for you -handy with next day delivery from De Bijenkorf. Leave this article casually open on your browser or go give a bold hint to someone who needs a little help from Cupid.

  1. L.K. Bennett CASSANDRA Metallic Pink Leather Tote. Just general gorgeousness and therefore a must-have. We all fell in love with L.K. Bennett pretty much the same day than we saw the first photos of Duchess of Cambridge and the feeling is still going strong. The brand makes classic and sophisticated London style better than any other brand. Order it here.
  2. Sisley IZIA Eau de Parfum 30ml. My favorite perfumes are often rose scents and this one is no exception. It’s a sophisticated feminine floral with notes of rose and musk. Order it here.
  3. Camp & Camps Teardrop Earrings with Pink Swarovski Crystals. I find teardrop the most elegant earring shape and much more grownup than admittedly cute heart shape.  Dutch Camps & Camps makes wonderfully wearable jewelry in a good price range. Order them here.

Bonus tip: Wake up your loved ones with these mini heart shape omelettes. Decorate with fresh berries -and if life allows accompany with a mimosa.

If diamonds are not your thing, mini heart shape omelettes are the next best there is. #family #valentines #lovemyboys

I on Image meets Karigar

Last week I had the pleasure to meet face-to-face with Kanak Hirani, co-founder of Karigar.  I saw Kanak for the first time last summer when she gave a powerful speech at Spark 2016 in the Global Female Entrepreneurship Panel. We met at the brand’s showroom in the heart of Amsterdam and I was delighted to learn more about the amazing journey of their products empowering artisan communities that produce their amazing weaved products meeting the urban aesthetics and style. On this cold winter day, that started with half of Amsterdam being without power, we spoke about style, wellness and female empowerment under lovely and warm Karigar merino wool capes.

I on Image: The journey of companies from past to present always fascinates me. Tell me about Karigar’s journey to what the brand is representing today.

Kanak: We built Karigar really from scratch. My experience is in journalism and sales and my business partner Sindhu Holla has a strong background in finance and sales. I am the people person and Sindhu is good with numbers. In 2013 we launched the brand Pashm. We very soon noticed that to be able to run a profitable brand the traditional Indian designs and vivid colours needed to be adjusted to the European market and taste. That is when we brought in the element of design and hired our 3rd business partner, designer Jolijn Fiddelaers. And so in 2014, Karigar as we know it today, was born.

I on Image: You told me that the word karigar means artisan in Hindi. What is your brands relationship with Indian artisans?

Kanak: India has a very rich textile heritage and Sindhu and I are both of Indian origin. Our brand is shape-shifting this heritage by translating traditional skills and techniques into contemporary handmade products. We work with many artisan groups across rural India and help empowering them through their work and ability to keep their craft traditions alive.

I on Image: We briefly spoke about the non-excistence of copyright laws in India. What other challenges does India provide?

Kanak: Finding the right artisan groups is the key. It takes 14 people to create one Karigar product. We have been to India ourselves to train the artisans to use the right techniques and colours, and educated them on our brand vision and our high quality standards. We are proud of our artisans and each our product comes with a Talking Tag that tells their story.

I on Image: This cape is just amazing, I don’t ever want to take it off, especially not on this cold day. What other products you have?

Kanak: Our first product was our wool-silk stole that was launched on Dutch Design Week with our company in 2014. Next year we set up a really successful crowd-funding campaign to fund our popular merino wool cape that you are now wearing. Our latest addition to the collection is our merino wool unisex scarf. All our products are yarn-died and the maximum batch size is 25 items per loom. Our items sustainability comes from their long-lasting, high quality and multi-functional qualities.

I on Image: I saw! The cape can be worn 17 different ways. I very much like the idea of a multi-functional product and can see it answering many of my client’s style dilemmas: an extra layer on chilly days, limited luggage kilos during business travel, wish to conceal tummy/hip area in a stylish way, keeping pregnant belly warm, breastfeeding discreetly… As an image consultant and a personal stylist I am answering these questions on a regular basis but also helping my clients to get the most out of their wardrobe and budget. Multi-functionality also responses to the wish to live with less items that bring them the most joy.

On this video Karigar designer Jolijn showshow to wear your Karigar cape:

I on Image: What is your vision on Karigar’s future?

Kanak: Our focus will remain on fashion. We want to bring one innovative product per season and keep on making beautiful wearable items for our customers to enjoy for years to come.

I on Image: Thank you very much for having me Kanak!

I have selected my favorites from the collection for you. To order www.karigar.nl

Stay warm and stylish everyone!

Going green

This autumn I find myself drawn to all things that are green. I associate the colour green strongly with nature: for me it’s the colour of tranquility, freshness, growth and fertility. Green makes me think of safety and it’s also commonly associated with money. It’s a delightfully fresh looking colour that to my excitement makes a return in fashion every few years.

With green it’s important to choose the right shade for your skin tone to avoid looking sick -or envious- but there is a shade for everyone. My personal favorites are bottle green and olive green. I also love fresh grass green and luxurious shades of emerald and jade. Green looks great with our trusted neutrals black and denim, and I am also giving you the green light to wear it with your winter whites (see what I did there).

I have created you these five green looks to wear this season in the office. Hope you like them as much as I do. Let’s celebrate the positive power of green! I have also pinned them all on my Pinterest board: https://nl.pinterest.com/IonImage/i-on-image-working-wardrobe/styled-by-i-on-image-aw2016/so go ahead and pin them on your own style board for your inspiration.

Did you like these looks? As mentioned earlier, each one of them can be ordered through StyleFruits.nl by clicking each photo. If you don’t feel like shopping on your own, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me. Along my image consulting services I offer personal shopping service -live and online. Shopping with an expert saves you time and money, also it saves you from having a headache trawling around the shops alone.
