Sale Shopping: The Do’s and The Don’ts

I just love a good sale shopping spree! The town is full of bargains at the moment but those bargains can be deceitful. Sometimes there is a reason why an item ended up in sale and sometimes you will find the item of your dreams for half the price.

To help you navigate through the racks full of fluorescent florals that hardly looked good on the model, I have compiled a list of the DO’s and the DON’Ts of sale shopping.

All rules apply regardless if you are shopping in stores or online.

sale shopping DO’s by i on image

1. Plan ahead

Go through your wardrobe and see what you really need. Sales are great for filling in the gaps in your style story and replacing your trusted basics. Look through your calendar for any upcoming events that might require a new outfit. Set yourself a budget

2. Buy basics

These pieces are the foundation of your wardrobe and need most often replacing. There is no point paying a full price for them when you can get a full update with a reduced price. I just replaced a bunch of T-shirts. Boring, but we do need them.

3. Buy classics

These pieces will give you joy for years to come. There are so many lists for the classics every woman and man needs to own but actually you define your own classics. A trench coat is a true classic but so is a biker jacket.

4. Buy items with WOW-factor

These are the items that make your wardrobe shine. It’s the 3rd stage when building a wardrobe after you have mapped your perfect basics & classics (see points above). These items tend to be pricey and are often made in a limited edition. If you manage to snatch one then you can congratulate yourself. Wear them with denim, flats or a plain T-shirt if the feel too OTT for normal day time use, see point below.

5. Consider price per wear

This is the real price of an item. The most expensive piece becomes a bargain if you wear it a lot throughout the years. The cheapest item becomes expensive if you wear it only once, or gasp, not even once.

6. Read the small print

Check the store’s exchange and return policy. Different rules may apply to sale items.

sale shopping DON’Ts by i on Image

1. Live in a dream

You are not Carrie Bradshaw. You cycle in the rain. You have children. You don’t have time for ironing or dry cleaning as it is. You don’t have a fancy event every week -or if you do can we please hang out?

2. Buy trends

The trend is usually over by the time the item reaches the sales rack. Buy only if the trend has your name on it. For me it means broderie anglaise and sequins. I wear both trends regardless of the trends.

3. Go for second best

If the fit is not right or the colour doesn’t flatter your features move on to the next item. A bargain should never make you feel mediocre. Look for sheer excitement and settle for nothing less.

4. Give up easily

The best buys are worth the browse. If your size or colour is sold out in store it’s worth checking if it’s available online or in another store. Take a photo of the product details to ensure  that you are hunting for the right one.

5. Buy it just because it’s on sale

The piece should still fit, flatter your features and fit your life style. Avoid duplicating items in your wardrobe. There are only so many frilly flower dresses that one summer can handle.

Enjoy your sale shopping, I hope you will find many fabulous things!

Summer Essentials 2017 by I on Image

In last week’s Friday Style Secrets episode on Facebook and Instagram I invited you to share your summer essentials and later I shared my own favorites that are:

  1. A cotton sundress in a lovely colour or print
  2. Sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin, killer mascara and lip gloss with SPF
  3. Sunglasses with an attitude

Inspired by the video I wanted to share with you more summer essentials that I have found for my clients or for myself.

Please note that, as usual, none of the links are affiliate links. I am an independent personal stylist and I take no kick backs from shops for advertising their products. I work with all brands from Primark to Prada and my sole aim is to find the best items for YOU. Should I on Image ever be involved in an affiliate program it will be clearly marked so you can make an educated style choice.

Here you can watch the video on Instagram and add your own summer essentials in the comments section throughout the summer of 2017

An unfortunate side note: That turquoise necklace that I am wearing on the video snapped last night and my kitchen was full of beads. I was sad because, besides of it being really nice for the summer, I made it myself a few years ago from two old necklaces (the other one was broken and the other one’s metal parts scratched my skin). I must repair it soon!

1. A cotton sundress in a lovely colour or print

This dress will take you from beach to parties. Just change the accessories. Remember to keep it as glam as possible throughout the day. Summer is too short for frumpy.

During the day it’s all about the easy breezy summer chic in flat sandals and cool shades. In the evening you can add a comfy wedge heel or platform sandals and jewelry, tons of jewelry. You can belt the dress for a more defined waistline but you can also eat in these dresses, unlike in many other summer frocks that I have seen lately.

I have selected only models that are 100% cotton and my strict criteria was that they must allow you to wear a proper bra underneath. I have also sneaked in a plus size dress because I strongly believe that enjoying summer and fashion belongs to everyone!

a) & Other Stories printed cotton shirt dress. Order yours here.

b) ASOS CURVE palm print midi sundress with ruffle. Order yours here.

c) COS Oversized printed T-shirt dress. Order yours here.

2. Sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin, killer mascara and lip gloss with SPF

You will enjoy the summer the most without a sunburn. First, it’s dangerous and aging. Second, it’s as far from chic as can be. So protect yourself. Stay in the shade or use a sunhat. Avoid the frying midday sun (it’s anyway a good excuse for a nap, if your schedule allows).

d) Colorescience Sunforgettable®Brush-on mineral sunscreen SPF 50. Available in 4 shades. Order yours here.

e) Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl waterproof mascara. My sister gave the normal version of this mascara to me as a present and I have been a fan ever since. Order yours here.

f) Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging lip gloss SPF 40 in universally flattering pink. Finding a tinted lip product with this high SPF was not easy! Order yours here.

3. Sunglasses with an attitude

Nothing quite adds attitude to any style of clothing than a pair of really cool shades. They allow you to go #nomakeup, hide the fact that you skipped your boot camp in the park and drank rose on the pier with your girlfriends until you (almost) missed the last bus (*happened to a friend*) and most importantly prevent you from getting that miserable headache that I always get from being in the sun.

g) &Other Stories colour block sunglasses. Order yours here.

h) Jeepers Peepers unisex visor style sunglasses with tortoiseshell and gold frame and brown tinted lens. Order yours here.

i) Le Specs ASHANTI matte quartz  diamond mirror cat-eye sunglasses. Order yours here.

I on Image Shops at I am Eva

It didn’t take long for I on Image to find a new obsession for 2017: Shopping at IamEva on Willemsstraat 171 in charming Jordaan in Amsterdam. I met the owner Eva Puerto Pastor through a Facebook group, she invited me to see her store and so I went. Next thing I know I was trying everything on.

I am Eva Willemsstraat 171 Amsterdam

Visit I am Eva at Willemsstraat 171 in Amsterdam or iameva.eu

All about Eva

Eva is from Barcelona and I have a thing for the cool and quirky Barcelona style since forever. Two of my friends from the fashion school moved to Barcelona in the late 90’s and I spent some really good times in the city, including Millenium.

It was lovely to see how Eva managed to bring the vibe I love to Amsterdam and make it all work so well. She also sells gift items and loads of incredibly cute stuff for children but of course my eyes were all on the fashion.

Here are my best picks for you! All 100% I on Image proof styles that would look amazing in and out of the office.

My best I am Eva looks

  1. This ese O ese mohair and glitter jumper in blush pink is my favorite. It’s so soft and the shade is so flattering! Love the 3/4 sleeves showing a little wrist and the subtly open round neckline. The arrow bracelet and the long Chanel-style necklace with charms are also from the shop. The jeans are my own throughout the story. More about the shoes below…

2. Y’all know how impossible it is to find heels that walk well and are not too delicate for Amsterdam (think cobble stones, cycling, weather…). Well, I am delighted to announce that the search can now end. IamEva has brought these super comfortable Eight & October Mary Janes from Barcelona to Amsterdam. They are classic but with a twist of cool. They come in gorgeous reddish brown that looks amazing with our beloved denim and the fringe is just about right. Baby soft sand colour ese O ese jumper with very deep V-neck and scarf are also from the shop.

3. The Eight & October Mary Janes also work well toughening up this otherwise delicate outfit combining an ese O ese mohair and glitter jumper in icy blue and Papillon Rebelle tulle midi skirt in a matching shade. Note about this skirt: It’s done really well! The shops are at the moment full of tulle or lace midi skirts that to my great disappointment have a too short, too tight or a cheapily made lining that rides up your thighs al day driving you mad. Amsterdam based Papillon Rebelle makes theirs oh so lush and full. I can see this style work well also at an Amsterdam style outdoor wedding that requires something gorgeous, a little bit warm but never too stiff. Just add a kilo of bling -and do something about your hair. Mine was on a busy mum ponytail that day as I didn’t think I would end up in a spontaneous fashion shoot!

4. Here you have more ese O ese loveliness: The basic white top worn under is easy to miss as it feels light as a feather against my skin. I am always looking for simply amazing basics and this brand definitely has a few keepers. Stock up before they sell out! The long jacket is also by ese O ese. I like to push the sleeves up to make my look more feminine and a bit nonchalant. I am wearing another pair of Eight & October Mary Janes in here with red, white and blue accents. They were a match made in heaven for the red clutch and blue feather necklace, both from IamEva.

Thank you for having me Eva and hope to go all crazy on fashion at I am Eva soon again!

I on Image’s Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

I have a confession to make: I am secretly a hopeless romantic. I am not big on commercial holidays but when the chance to celebrate love comes knocking on your door I always end up thinking: “Well, why not”. There is enough misery in this world so why not indeed create a little rose dusted magic where you otherwise wouldn’t find it. Well at least not without an effort.

Happy Valentine's Day from I on Image

To celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow I have collected my favorite romantic picks for you -handy with next day delivery from De Bijenkorf. Leave this article casually open on your browser or go give a bold hint to someone who needs a little help from Cupid.

  1. L.K. Bennett CASSANDRA Metallic Pink Leather Tote. Just general gorgeousness and therefore a must-have. We all fell in love with L.K. Bennett pretty much the same day than we saw the first photos of Duchess of Cambridge and the feeling is still going strong. The brand makes classic and sophisticated London style better than any other brand. Order it here.
  2. Sisley IZIA Eau de Parfum 30ml. My favorite perfumes are often rose scents and this one is no exception. It’s a sophisticated feminine floral with notes of rose and musk. Order it here.
  3. Camp & Camps Teardrop Earrings with Pink Swarovski Crystals. I find teardrop the most elegant earring shape and much more grownup than admittedly cute heart shape.  Dutch Camps & Camps makes wonderfully wearable jewelry in a good price range. Order them here.

Bonus tip: Wake up your loved ones with these mini heart shape omelettes. Decorate with fresh berries -and if life allows accompany with a mimosa.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
