Greetings from SPARK 2016

Last month I had the pleasure to join an amazing group of speakers at SPARK 2016 conference that was held at We Work Metropool on 14th June 2016.

This was my first public speaking event in years so you can only imagine how nervous I was. Last year I volunteered at the event and got so inspired that I set myself a goal to speak there the next year. When I found out that I was accepted to speak at the event this year my feelings ranged from sheer excitement to paralyzing fear of failure. How could I possibly measure up with the other speakers who were so much more experienced than I was? The Spark organization must have read my thoughts because us speakers received a fantastic prepping session from Tara Phillips of Cause & Affect Speeches. I can warmly recommend her sessions to everyone looking to upgrade their public speaking skills. It took me a pile of colourful PostIts, several cups of green tea (okay, some wine may have been consumed in the process too…) and a mini vacation to Venice, but one day I just was ready to talk about Polishing Your Personal Image.

The day was kicked off by an upbeat key note speech from Colleen Geske, the brain behind a hilarious blog-turned-bestseller: Stuff Dutch People Like. She spoke about her way to success, hickups on her book publishing path and that ugly moment when she got mansplained. I knew about SDPL but I could never imagine it’s owner was such a fantastic person. We all have a lot to learn from Colleen and I admire her wit and perseverance. Long story short:

Your success should look like you and no-one else.

For me this was definitely highlight of the conference -and that was only the beginning! Colleen’s speech was soon followed by a break-out session from Stephanie Ward of Firefly Coaching. I had the pleasure to meet Stephanie at the last year’s event and I have been a keen follower of her work ever since. With Stephanie it feels like you have your very own marketing department and this year’s theme “Pricing & Packaging Tips to Create a Business Model that Serves You & That Your Clients Love” was yet another dip into the eternal pool of her wisdom.

After delicious and healthy Cropbox lunch it was time for more break-out sessions and my speech. My topic was “Polishing Your Personal Image”. I approached the subject from three different angles: Communication, appearance and digital presence. These elements form your image that is your best calling card and the only aspect of your career that you have a full control of. Your image is also one of the best self-investments you can ever make. I had a lovely audience who listened carefully and came up with great questions afterwards. Thank you for everyone who came to listen and thank you for the organizers for giving me this wonderful opportunity! If you missed it you can view my slides here.

After the second break-out session we gathered to listen to most inspiring female economy stories at Global Female Entrepreneurship Panel where Maneuela Damant of Open the Door Leadership, Nassira Boudhan of Fashion for Education and Kanak Hirani of Pashm and Karigar shared their views on how to provide opportunities for women around the globe by empowering them. This session was a real eye-opener for me and it had a very powerful message!

Last year I on Image was a proud sponsor of the  fantastic event and it was my first outing as an entrepreneur. I made some really wonderful contacts at the event and with some of them I am still in regular contact. I was delighted to see how this movement has grown over a year, just like my own business has. Read more about my goody bag offer at SPARK 2015 here. Speaking of goody bags: I loved it! My favorite items were healthy EatLiveLoveFood crackers and a fun desk exercise card from TotalSelf. We even did some of the exercises in the interactive session “When you thrive, your business thrives: Best practices for protecting your most important asset” but your own desk at home or at the office is probably the place where they are most efficient. Either way:

Remember to take care of number one (yes, that’ll be you).

It’s not selfish, it’s an investment.

The wonderful day was closed by Emmy McCarthy of Emmy McCarthy Consulting. I am a long-term fan of Emmy who is best known for her community building at Amsterdam Mamas where I volunteer as a community admin since 2014. Emmy starting her own consulting business was huge news in our community because everyone was always asking for advice from her and wondering if they should really be on the clock since she always managed to have the best ideas and answers for us. Her closing notes were no exception to this. I was particularly fond about her views on how individuals can add value to their communities by simply contributing to them. Her observations were sharp and spot on:

“Focusing on collaborative growth allows us to drive forward a new economic model that is focused on the value which we provide to our communities rather than the value that we can extract from them.” -Emmy McCarthy

You can read her closing notes in full on her blog post.

It was so nice to see everyone again and to make new connections. I felt I was a part of something very special and that energy carries a long way.

Thank you for everyone who made this inspiring day possible!

I am looking forward to the 2017 event already!

Finnish Women’s Day 2016 in Zutphen

A few of weeks ago I traveled to Zutphen for the 28th edition of Finnish Women’s Day. It’s an annual event full of fun and friendship that gathered together 94 Finnish women living in the Netherlands. This was my second year in the organizing committee and a truly wonderful experience! The event’s special guests were Finland’s craziest shop keeper couple, social media phenomenon from a small village Äkäslompolo in Lapland, Sampo and Minttu Kaulanen of Jounin Kauppa. They spoke us about their stellar success, stamina and perseverance, family life and love under the event’s theme, untranslatable quintessentially Finnish term, SISU.

According to Sisu- expert Emilia Lahti SISU “is extraordinary courage and determination in the face of adversity. It’s about not seeing a silver lining in the clouds, and yet jumping into the storm anyways. At the core of sisu is the idea that in each of us there is more strength that meets the eye.” And for me as a Finnish native this is something I can relate to in my own life. Despite of living over a decade abroad I am still through and through Finnish and feel like I owe a lot in my life to sisu so I really enjoyed listening to the talks under this theme. It’s a long standing tradition that on Saturday evening there is a party where everyone dresses up according to the theme. I went as Rosie the Riveter -who else?

I had the pleasure to host a style workshop under theme Last chance inspired by my popular service Personal shopping in your own wardrobe.  Each participant could bring to the workshop a few items from home, that have been causing them headache. We analyzed each item and thought creative new ways to wear them. As a starting point we used body shape analysis, colour seasons and great basic wardrobe that allows easy mixing and matching. The time flew by having fun! It was almost meant to be that one of my workshop participants won I on Image gift voucher in the Sunday raffle.

Congratulations to the lucky winner and thank you for all the participants!

This year has been amazing for me and I can’t thank enough my wonderful clients and loyal social media followers for believing in me. I was thinking of several ways to show my gratitude and decided that supporting those in need is closest to my personal values. Therefore I have donated the money reserved for I on Image Christmas cards and business gifts to Blijf Groep.

“Blijf Groep was created from a private initiative in Amsterdam in 1974 and has been successfully campaigning against domestic violence for nearly 40 years. Blijf Groep is a professional and innovative organization that develops effective interventions in cases of domestic violence. In addition to developing forms of assistance for the entire family, Blijf Groep has, in recent years, gained a great deal of experience in assisting children who have witnessed domestic violence. Alongside of our shelters for women and children, we also offer shelters to men who are victims of domestic violence.”

Thank you!

With love and deep gratitude,

Jenni

My clients -the rock stars

The more you engage with customers the clearer things become and the easier it is to determine what you should be doing. -John Russell

Following this brilliant advice, I sent out questionnaires to my recent clients to learn how they perceived my service, what they loved and what they wanted more. The feedback was really positive and made me feel proud to be able to serve such a wonderful clientele, like marketing consultant Dimitra who left me with these encouraging words.

Thank you very much Dimitra! I am so happy you had a great experience with me!

“I enjoyed the process overall, from booking to the actual appointment and the after-sales service. You are very open, friendly and easy to relate to, and also very professional and well-prepared. I liked getting the printouts of the articles for the branding. I got a lot of information that de-mystified the whole “styling” issue for me. I always thought it was some kind of DNA/advanced skillset that I was simply born without. But now I feel much more confident to try out things I like and follow simple rules with regards to colours and shapes.”

Do you want to give me feedback and profit of one extra month of free online consultation added on top of your current package? Please write me an email to ionimage@gmail.com with subject “feedback” and I will send you the questionnaire.

Thank you for your valuable feedback in advance!

A word from a happy customer

Jane is an Amsterdam based writer and I had the pleasure to work with her in August. Our goal was to shop for a perfect holiday capsule wardrobe that needed to be very comfortable to wear and work hard for her even after holidays. We did a three hour session and found fabulous things for her to wear. I gave suggestions on how each item could be combined with other things and how they could be easily updated to the next season. I was delighted to hear how much she had enjoyed her stylish holiday!

For me customer satisfaction is the very center of my thinking and I continuously develop my business to answer my customers’ demanding needs in the best possible way. That is why I sometimes ask those big questions:

How did I do? Was I able to meet your expectations? What else I can do for you?

I love reading feedback and suggestions from my amazing customers but when the response is this good, I will publish it proudly on my website! Thank you very very much Jane! Your kind words make me feel humble!

“I was lucky enough to have a personal shopping experience with Jenni right before my summer holiday. Whilst shopping can be hard work at any time of the year, the summer wardrobe is always one of the hardest, partly because I want clothes that I am really only likely to to wear very much whilst I am actually away – strangely I do not seem to need summery clothes that often in Amsterdam! One of the wonderful things about Jenni is how she makes it look easy! After taking the time to talk to me in detail about what I like and what I needed she was able to walk through the shop with the sharpest eye for detail, spotting things that I would probably never have even noticed. Even in a large department store like de Bijenkorf she seemed to miss nothing and was not overwhelmed or distracted by the enormous array of fashion that it holds. She also accompanies you to the changing room so that you have someone reliable to show things to when you have them on. I found this invaluable because we had quite a large selection of things and she would mix and match items for me showing me things that would work together and what wouldn’t. I ended up with a small capsule wardrobe of summery items, all of which I have loved and wore a lot during my holiday. But best of all, the are the sort of things that I also wear here so they don’t end up being consigned to the cupboard until my next summer holiday.

Of all the things I loved about Jenni and her approach, one of my favourite things is that, in addition to her enormous knowledge about fashion, she is also not snobby about labels. She was just as happy to take me to Esprit or even Topshop as she was to look at high end designers. For Jenni, what mattered was the style and what I wanted to achieve, not about making herself look good and leaving me with a bunch of clothes that I would look awesome in but probably only wear once. Aside from making her excellent at what she does, it also makes her very relaxing to go shopping with. She made me feel confident and comfortable, which is not something I normally experience when I am shopping for clothes. I have had personal shoppers before, but generally I have ended up with only one or two things that I got much wear out of and a lot of things that I quickly regretted and never wore.

I can honestly say that this was easily one of the best shopping experiences I have had in more than 15 years. Her whole service is great value for money I think, especially when you consider all the longer term implications of what she does for you, a feeling of confidence in what you are wearing, an understanding of how to put looks together, and the fact that she takes the time to figure out just who you are and what you want before you go near the shops. I will definitely be booking Jenni’s services again!”

Welcome to my website: Hello world

Easter holiday is over and summer holidays are not even remotely in sight so let’s talk about business, namely your image in business.

I am proud (and hyperventilating out of nervousness as I type) to launch and introduce my new image consulting business I on Image. My company offers image consulting for professionals looking to enhance or renew their professional image through tailored individual sessions.

I am very grateful for having such an inspiring bunch of friends who have pushed me in the right direction. A big applaud to my mentors and fairy business godmothers!

This launch is really just the beginning. My next steps involve registering at the Chamber of Commerce and working on my website.

In the meanwhile, spread the word: There’s a new mumpreneur in town!
